I've got an exhaust manifold here from a Continental 4 cylinder flathead engine. From the factory, this one had a threaded 1.5" pipe stub (half nipple) threaded into the exhaust exit on the cast iron manifold. The stub is in pretty bad shape, corroded badly etc. and I want to remove it from the manifold. Obviously, it's been sealing itself in there for 60 years and is in pretty tight so threading it out isn't possible. Any way you might suggest getting it out and hopefully leaving some remnants of the femaile pipe threads in the manifold? Your help is much appreciated.

Used the hacksaw method below and it worked great, made just one slice and peeled out the stub with a pair of pliers. Threads look pretty good in the manifold, just a quick cleanup and ready to go. Thanks for the help boys.

This is doable.

Couple of things to try.

Cut the pipe from the inside out with a hacksaw blade. Get a handle that lets you use just the blade for this. Cut the pipe in two or three places. Go on into the threads of the manifold but make sure you get all the pipe. Then use a small (re. tiny) chisel to peal the pipe away from the manifold. Once you get it started drive the chisel straight in between the manifold and pipe.

Another posibility is to cut it out with a cutting torch. The steel of the pipe should heat a little faster than the cast iron and you can blow the steel pipe out. Might need to finish up with a o-ring pick and then a tap. This takes a VERY delicate touch as it is real easy to cut to deep. You can also use the torch in place of the hacksaw just don't go as deep and figure on breaking what is left of the threads of the pipe.

I have used both methods with a good (not perfect) deal of success.

The key thing to remember is this isn't a 5 minute job. Take your time and if things aren't rusted beyond help it will come apart.

Hope this helps

jt

Excellent methods, and it will work that way. The only thing I might add is that once all remains of the old pipe are gone, you can heat the inside of the female portion with a torch to help get rid of the carbon and rust build-up in the threads. I have used this method on several Farmall manifolds, I still like to chase the threads with a pipe tap, but getting rid of that carbon makes the tapping go a lot easier. DO NOT try tapping while the manifold is still hot, it has a tendency to make the pipe tap get really stuck.

with manifold off, looking inside of stub.with a hacksaw cut two vertical cuts 180 degrees from each other through stub.try not to get into cast iron thread part too bad.when through stub collapse inward with a minor tap with a punch ,then chase threads with a thread tap

You can blow the nipple our with a cutting torch. The cast iron manifold will not be damaged, if you are quick.I have done this. Stan
