Cookies arent the only threat. .dat files will haunt you forever, so will various forms of spyware. I'm a bit excentric about computer safety.

My procedure. Friday evening, manually clean AOL and IE of cookies, temp files, and history. 8:00 pm. Norton autoscan. When finished, Ad-AwareSE (free from Lavasoft), it always finds crap that the other stuff doesnt clean. Then WindowWasher (for the .dat files) with preset to shread free space to NSA protocol (7 over writes). Then defrag hard drive.

I can do it while in Internet Explorer. On the top menu, click TOOLS. On the pull down menu, click on INTERNET OPTIONS. On that pull down, you can click on DELETE COOKIES, DELETE TEMPORARY FILES, and/or CLEAR HISTORY. I do all periodically. But as mentioned, you do have to re-enter names and passwords the next time you log on to a web site requiring such.
AOL has a similar feature and procedure.

After doing that and reentering the information do you have to keep on reentering or will one time do it?

If you delete the cookie for a website where you log in
then you will have to log back in to the website.
And you will stay logged in until you delete the cookie again.

If you are using Internet Explorer there is a free
tool you can get to manage cookies. Cookie Wall.
Cookie Wall will alert you to each new cookie
and you can accept it or reject it.
This lets you keep only the cookies you want.
I have been using this program for years.

Download and install a free program called CCleaner.
Run this program whenever you want to really clean
everything out of your system.
It cleans cookies, history files, temporary internet files (or cache), MRUDs, index.dat files, etc.
It cleans all the junk files off your computer that
you really don"t need and are just taking up space.
And you can tell it to exclude file types for files you don"t want deleted.
I tell it to leave my cookies, cache, and history.
If you clean out cookies then you have to log into sites again.
This is a great program and recommended on many forums.

It's also a good idea to delete your temporary internet files. In Windows XP it stores EVERY page you visit. Takes up a LOT of space. It's found in the same place as deleting your cookies. When you delete your cookies you have to sign on to any password type sites again. Make sure you have your passwords written down before deleting the cookies.

Microsoft Windows 98 and later

1. Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
2. In Control Panel , double-click Internet Options.
3. On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
4. Click OK.

In Internet Options on the General tab, under Tempory Internet files, click Settings. Then the Settings block comes up, click View Files. A new window will come up with all the stored cookies that are on your computer. You can then delete or save cookies at your discretion. For websites that you use regularly save them. Others can be safely deleted. Also under the Advanced tab, under Security there is a box you can check to "Delete Temporary Files when Browser is closed". This will automatically delete the files when you close your Browser. SpywareBlaster is a freeware download that will automatically block cookies from unwanted places. It works in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Netscape. Both Firefox and Netscape have provisions in their Browser that allow the User to Allow, Allow for Session, or Block cookies. Works well, but can be a pain in the rear until you figure it out. This can be done in IE also, but it is not nearly as User friendly as the others.

The step-by-step above will handle your cookies.

Spywareblaster? Tried it, didn't like it. When I worked a year as a computer tech, the tools of choice were...

Ad-Aware (you can download this for free)
Spybot S&D (free also, but might not be current)
Webroot SpySweeper (used to be free, now the free version needs to be paid for to remove the stuff.)
Pest Patrol (when I used it, it was the most thorough.)

I also played around with HiJackThis, but found it a little too complicated for the average user. I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to do a lot of asking around on a forum.

Oh, be careful of what you put on... Several nasty programs claim to be nasty-removal software. SpywareQuake and VirtualBouncer come immediately to mind. If you see VirtualBouncer, the tools above will remove it. If you see SpywareQuake, you need more specialized tools to get rid of it.

And of course, all of the above programs need to be updated regularly, just like your antivirus software (you do run that, right?) I used to sell lots of copies of Norton, now I just recommend AVG for the people who don't have it.

Yeah, they add up. I keep forgetting to do it once in awhile. Last time, it deleted stuff for ten minutes to get it all out!
