I have a Farmall 263 gas engine and the valve rocker arms are getting a little noisy, not bad though. I want to adjust them but my older son said just leave well enough alone. What are your thoughts?

Tom

You could use a dial guage for setting them, if feelers are not accurate enough because of wear.

I used to have an old Black and Decker valve shop machine built 1940s-1960s.Any one with half a brain could run that rig and do a perfict regrind on rocker faces every time.Find a guy with one of those machines and you won't have to be concerned about a perfect concentric job of rocker facing.

Well , it seams like they need it every couple years if ya use them the way we do . When adjusting the valves on them ya have to look and see where the ware pattern is on the rockerarm as it will not be dead center on the valve stem and you have to get the feller gauge set in there just wright or there will be a bridgeing affect and your adjustment will be off and one should go over it a couple times to get it wright as once over you will have a couple tickers . Way back when Hector was a puppy and cars and trucks had solid lifters you ran the valves every 10000 miles on a car or pickup engine if ya wanted it to stay in top shape , on a 5.9 B sieres Cummins about every 25000 miles on a 855 NTC cummins i did mine at 25000 miles and on the newer 3406 Cats they recomend every 100000 miles . So if the old girl has some ticken then she is not running up to snuff .

Hi Tom,

I adjusted mine 'bout three or four months ago, but darnit! Left one a little loose. Going back in today and this time will do it "hot and running" instead of static.

Trouble is, it's gonna take another gasket I'll just bet.

If they are loose, adjust 'em, but don't do like I did. Make sure they are right before ya button 'er back up. :>)

Allen don't do it running that is why they give ya the setting they way they do , what happened is the end of your rockers is woren and you bridged it by tryen to get the full feeler gauge between the rocker and the valve stem , put you glasses on and look at how the rocker rides on the stem and you will see what i am talken about and roll her over twice you'll find a couple on the second round , i use my points feeler gauge to set the valves on them as it has the narrow blades and also the oil that is setting in the cup of the lifter can throw ya off on valve set . And never even think of tryen to do a valve set on a DIESEL running as you can put the head of the valve into the top of the piston in a heart beat.

Yea , the waer pattern on the end is what gives ya the problem . When one does a rebuild or a valve job on them it is best to have the ends of the rockers reground , but it is getting harder to find and old machinest that realy knows how to do this correctly and if not done wright then it wears the valve guides.
