I have a 1961 Simplicity walk behind tractor with a model 19 Briggs and Stratton cast iron horizontal shaft motor. I've got no spark and am wondering how to test the coil. I've done car coils before with a multi-meter and assume the same can be done with this one (but I don't know how many ohms it should read). Also, I tested the compression and found it to be 42 psi. Seems low to me; what do you think?
Finally, if I end up needing rings, a coil, and points and condenser, where is the best place to get them (decent parts and reasonable price).

Yup - you can test the coil for continuity with your multimeter.

A good B&S coil will show resistance from the plug wire to ground of around 2,500 ohms (up to 500 ohms or so higher or lower is OK).

Resistance from primary wire to ground should be a few tenths of an ohm - ie. almost a dead short. (Disconnect the primary wire from the breaker points and condensor before testing measuring).

Note this test only looks for continuity in the primary and secondary windings - it does not identify a high voltage short to ground in the secondary, etc.

Most local mower shops will stock ignition parts for that old engine at reasonable prices.

Compression pressure of 42 psi doesn't sound too far off. Keep in mind those old B&S engines are very low compression (like 3:1 or lower) by design!

I have a Garden Mark Squire tractor. I believe it was made by Simplicity for Montgomery Wards. I can't find any numbers on it other than what is on the engine tag. I am trying to find out the manufactureing date. The numbers on the engine tag are Model 19, Type 706047, Serial # 641992. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks, Ken
