I"ve spent from 9AM till just now tring to get on on and check whats going on at Y-T. My computer system got hijacked some how and it took al day just to be able to be back on line. Sure wish there was a way to stop people from doing that and when you catch them they sould have them shot or make them work for a company to make it impossiable to hack in to a person system. Guess you could say I"m sort of mad right now.

I have been reading some of these posts and can't resist to get in. I was on dial up for 5 years and got sick of it being so darn slow. I was to far out in the country for DSL, so checked into wireless through a tower which is located 5 miles away. They came out and ran a test and it worked perfect. So I went that route but the cost is $35 per month. I then downloaded the latest Firefox browser as the hackers supposedly don't bother with the smaller browsers like Firefox or Netscape as much as with MS Internet Explorer. I then switched to Thunderbird which is a part of Firefox for my email account. The new Netscape is a great browser and runs Firefox as it's background browser. Just do a search on Google to find them, and the best part is that they are free. I am using McAfee virus scan and firewall. Also Ad-Aware, and Spyblaster which are all free spyware products. Spyblaster stops spies before they get into your PC and Ad-Aware is supposed to get after they get in, but you do have to keep them updated and run them everyweek to get the protection. I also bought Registry Mechanic to keep my PC straightened out and up to speed. I do go to the Trend Micro site and run their free PC "house call" virus scan every other time with McAfee. I know it is alot of monkey business, but I had a virus once 5 yrs ago, and I told myself not again if I can help it. If anyone wants a list of the free stuff for you PC get in touch and I will email you a list of things to try and help you out, be patient, as I have beans to plant yet.
Oh, by the way, have been on wireless for over a year and not one hitch what so ever, it is always on, no dialing up and waiting and waiting. I was with MSN for my dial up and boy was there always trouble, but MSN is nothing but part of Microsoft so go figure.

That McAfee My wife got and put in our newer computor and it messed things up so bad I quit trying to yse it for anything except the scanner and the digital camara, even after it supposedly expired over 6 months ago it still tries to make problems every time I try to use it so I keep on with the old machine a windows 95, the new one is windows 98. I call that McAfee program a virus and have no use for it.

I have heard of stories about not being able to get rid of McAfee once it is on your PC. I have also heard of the same for Norton. I have never had any problem with McAfee, but the day is probably coming. Go to this site and click on "Computers & More" and post your problem, maybe someone can help you out with it.

Here a few links to check out, the first one has some sites that cover the free stuff.
Link

Link
Just copy and paste these addresses into your browser. The Firefox browser is much safer than IE and is faster, it has less stuff operating in the background. The new Netscape 8.1 has pop-up blocker, and ID theft protection built into and it is free. Both Firefox and Netscape have the new tabbed browsing and it makes it nice, especially in the Netscape 8.1. Hope this helps.

Running your computer from behind a computer stops the direct attacks. A software firewall and security setting set high enough that you have to allow scripting or active X before it will operate, will help too. Using an Apple helps a whole lot.

I've been running Firefox since getting started 14 months or so ago (Dell 2400); had the computer guy put in ZoneAlarm, undo the Norton "security suite" that came with the machine and install Norton 2005 and Spysweeper (the computer guy on the WSJ (Mossbarger) said they were better). Hardly ever see a popup, no spam, except the Nigerians seem to think I'm stupid (maybe they talked to my wife...).
Microsoft has half the money in the world (or at least half of what the oil co's don't have) and they keep putting out stuff that's got more holes and backdoors than Carters got Little Liver Pills. All these other people seem to come up with things to plug MS's holes, kinda makes you wonder if MS leaves them on purpose, but I'm probably just being paranoid...again....

I refuse to run MS lookout (outlook express). Mozilla does me OK. My Isp,who is supposed to be smart and up to date is furnishing me with, and recocomending, ZoneAlarm Secutity Suite. I shut down Nortons to run it. So far it hasn't blown any thing up.

Thats what I had to do. First with earthlink who I have for my server then with Dell. I ended up haveing to down load a new browers, which I do say I like better the my old one. If almost twice as fast and Dell says its harder for hacker to get in to so I guess in the end I'm happy but only time will tell for sure

Do you regularly run Spybot and AdAware?

Some time back, year or so ago, that happened to my mother's PC. Did Control/Alt/Del and brought up task manager, identified a program tying up her processor that I didn't recognize, "ended task" (shut it down), then did a file search for that program and deleted it. As I recall, was kind've tough to delete because was an executable file, but stayed with it a couple of hours and got it. I'm thinking that I had to go in through the DOS/Command prompt to delete it - I don't recall now. Was Ok after that. She has McAfee spy-zapper through AOL now and luckily hasn't had a problem, knock on wood.

One screwup I caused on mine once is that had and subscribed to Norton Anti-virus. Found a copy of the newest latest greatest McAfee and loaded it. Holy cow, the two of them fought it out and locked up the processor tighter than a drum. Everytime tried to reboot, as soon as XP started to load, crash and burned the second XP tried to load. It took a couple of hours before I realized if I'd boot up in safe mode, that I'd be able to out McAfee and did. Will never make that mistake again.

Mark

Mark; had that happen once too. Only I thought I had deleted McCaffee and there was a hidden "resident" file inside another program. Just that was enough to cause Norton to refuse to come on line. I use Norton and keep it updated, no more problems. I had several virus get past Mccaffee. But in fairness, that was several years ago. Bob
