I am looking at an small Iveco 4 cylinder diesel made for a semi refrigerated trailer. History is unknown. It is capped and been oversprayed blue. Could it be new? would this interchange with a New Holland tractor engine? Is there any demand for these engines.

Iveco is the largest producer of diesels worldwide. They are owned by or a joint venture of some sort of CNH (Case, New Holland) and are located in Europe. They make engines for tractors, trucks, combines, generators, reefers, and just about anything else. I think they are a good engine with the limited number of contacts with them I have had. Think about that reefer engine though....you put $50,000 worth of food in a semi-trailer then run it 24 hours a day without stopping....would you put a less-than-good engine on that reefer? I think if it bolts up and doesn't have a zillion hours on it you should be fine.

As I understand things, Iveco was/is a subsiduary of the Fiat group, the same as NewHolland. Iveco engines are used in several NH tractors today, particulairly under 90 hp. They seem to be a decent small disposable engine. When they're worn out, you dispose of them.
On the largest engine maker, I don't have any current information.... but not so many years ago, Mercedes Benz was the largest producer of diesel engines in the world, followed I believe by Cummins, Cat and Detroit. I believe Iveco would be the most prominent power source in small tractors in Europe today, the same as Cummins/CDC are the most prominent power source in most larger ag and just about all construction equipment in North America today. It's a fair bet that if it isn't Cat powered, it's Cummins powered, except Deere equipment.
I believe Mercedes has deep market penetration in Europe with both automotive diesels and truck engines, and the truck engines are now making a strong apperance in NA. Some how I just don't quite see where Iveco has that kind of hold to be the largest in the world, overall. Big no doubt, but not biggest, although I could be wrong.

Have a N.H. TL90, bought new in 2000- came off the delivery truck using oil at the rate of 7 qts per 300hrs.-one of those "awsome" Iveco engines.New Holland replaced it after 1000hrs and alot discussion with dealer as to cause of defective engine. N.H. replaced engine free of charge and have had no trouble since. So no matter how great they,re supposed to be you can always get a lemon.

It very well could be an engine that fits in one of the CNH manufactured machines. Being that Iveco is THE LARGEST maker of diesel engines, no telling what it could fit. It is proven that these engines are fuel efficient. We have a Hesston tractor (Fiat, before they bought Ford and changed it to New Holland in '93) and this tractor is awesome. Same engine that was in the 3010S New Holland. Little 3 cylinder, and its a great runner.
