I AM CONSIDERING BUYING THIS TRACTOR . IT IS ABOPVE AVERAGE CONDITION, BUT HYDRAILIC DOES NOT NOT WANT TO LIFT UNITL EVERY THING HAS WARMED UP.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE PROBLEM AND THE ESTIMATED COST TO FIX IT.IHAVE BEEN TOLD IT A NEW FILTER IS NEEDED.

THANK YOU.

Remember the name of the person that told you it needed a new filter.. now.. listen carefully.. mentally exclude that person from giving you advice.. he doesn't have a clue about the tractor in question... that belly pump has no filter... not even a suction side strainer..

Everyone else here gave you good advice..

As Bob said and also for a little bit more money you can buy a 601 or 801 series tractor which will have live hyds and might have live PTO and are just plain more reliable then the old 9N, or 2N or the 8N with front mount distibutor. Now the later 8N with side monut thats a differant story they take a lot less work to keep running then the older ones do. Like Bob I also have a few Ns and the ones with front mounts always need work to get to run and the one with side mount I haven't touched in years and it starts all the time

check out the post below about the 48 8N that won't start. Your's will have the same troublesome front mounted distributor. The three point works on rear axle gear oil not hydraulic fluid so it will be slow to glacial in cold weather. They need an over running clutch to safely to pto work. I had a 9N and found it to be a spiteful little beast.

Don't get me wrong here, I love the Ford "N" series tractors, and have a couple of my own.

However, unless you are willing to learn to work on it yourself (or have a "good 'ole boy" nearby who knows about them, and is willing to work cheap or for "refreshments"), repairs can get awefully expensive!

The trouble is, the guys at MOST of the dealer shops aren't familiar with them anymore, and the will "learn" at your expense!

Are you aware of the 9N's limitations... lack of live PTO, lack of live hydraulics, and lack of (OEM) three-point hitch position control?

Lots of folks buy these "old gems" based upon their mystique, and don't realize how different they are form modern "yuppie tractors" until it is too late.

If you are still with me here, and still want to joint the ranks of "N" owners, here's a link to the 3-pont troubleshooting procedure from "N" guru ZANE.

Also, get an owner's manual, and at least an I&T FO-4 shop manual.

Good luck! I hope you get it , and it works out for you!
