I am preparing to mount a winch to my 20+5 14K gooseneck trailer. Not sure if I want to get a 10,000# or 12,000# winch. I have been looking awfully hard at the Milemarker as compared to Warn models. Looks like the Milemarker is substantially less money but I have not seen or worked with one personally. I'm not planning on using the winch much (I hardly used the undersized Warn 3500# on my FL-60 with the flatbed before I sold the truck) so I hate to tie up twice the money in another Warn that is going to just sit there for occasional use. I know the 3500# was undersized, so I need to replace it. I will mostly be winching up dead tractors and a car or muddin' truck for a buddy once in a while. I've been trying to look at as many trailers as I can find at shows to see the best method to mount and have come up with some good ideas. I have been unable to determine the brand or age on most I've seen though to see what others are using.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
I have a mile marker. Not too pleased with them.
I have it on a 24" gooseneck. I bought the first one and tore the gears out of it pulling a green 820 on the trailer.
Put the second one (dealer replaced the first one) and I am seeing metal flakes on the trailer frame again. All I have used it for was to go and get a little Popsqualli dad had.
Spend the extra $. You won't be sorry.
My 2 cents..... .

Bill46,

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad to finally hear some real feedback and not some propaganda from the manufacturer. I will keep your comments in mind when I purchase.
Thanks,
Brian

Yes it is. I got it in June last year. It is a 20+5 14K. The factory options I added were the third ramp and the open dovetail. I'm sure glad I upgraded the dovetail as I can go up it when wet without any worry unlike my friends who have wood and have attached expanded metal so they can grip it. I also added a 18x18x48 toolbox on the drivers side so I can lock up my chains and binders. Brian

Brian, here is how I mounted my winch,10000lb Warn winch that I purchased in 1992. The new 12000lb is the same as my old 10000lb. I always have a snatch block with me just in case!

I have the same mounts on all 3 of my trailers, also can use winch in the easy lift reciever on my truck. Dual purpose unit. Hope this gives you some ideas..

i would buy the biggest you can afford. i have the 12 i really like it. what i did was had a weld shop weld a piece of heavy channel between the frame rails on the uprights. then i mounted the winch on the that. its out of the way, then you mount the control box right on the side of the uprights, i also had a chain box made between the frame rails below that. you could up 2 of them one on each side of the jack. it really works good. you then put a battery in one of the boxes. then i made a lead from the pickup to the trailer so when i plug the trailer in i just pug in the lead also so i always keep the battery charged an when i am winching i am running off the battery in the trailer an the pickup. works great. my lead is made out of welding lead.
just my 2 cents worth an then some johndeeregene

Thanks for the reply. What brand of winch do you have? I would really like to hear a testimonial for the Milemarker if possible before I spend the money. The fabrication for the mount is no problem for me so I will be making it in my father's shop myself. I had thought of making the winch removable, but I'm afraid a 12K winch could get too heavy and awkward to be useful.
Thanks,
Brian

Looks just like my rig (2003 Diesel)Different name on the trailer. Even the same tool box. I had welding shop weld up a sort of exattrated U that slips over the front of the trailer frame. Then I can attach the winch to it just like I would in the reciever hitch on the truck. Sort of kept it dual purose and has been very usefull. Its really heavy without the winch, and you may need to modify the design but I bet if you stopped at a fabricating shop and told him what you want he could come up with it in short order. I think mine cost me just under a $100. 2 years ago. Good luck. Bob
