Is it better to have a tractor with a positive down force on the 3 point or a floating 3 point?

I was asking cause I'm looking at two tractors, one is a IH 300 utility with a two point hitch and the other is a Massey Ferguson 65. Just wondering if there was a preference or advantage of one type or the other.

Thanks
Steve

The down force feature on the IH fasthitch can be a very useful feature, posthole diggers, back blades etc. They all had a pin in the hitch that when removed allowed them to float like a conventional 3pt, although somewhat limited travel. The down side to them is finding 2pt fasthitch equipment is becoming very difficult.

Where is this pin located?

Other alternative is to convert 2pt to 3pt hitch. Have that on my Farmall 200, works pretty well, although there are limitations. Use downpressure to drive steel fence posts. Most other uses are best on float.

I would point out that the Case 400 (not 400B) had a position on the control lever for down pressure. Very nice when diging post holes.

very few tractors have down force on the lift arms. Some of the IH 2 points were the only ones I know of. And I never thought is was any advantage. Any time you start transfering weight to the implement you take weight off the tractor and loose traction.

Down pressure hydraulics are a wonderful thing. There must be hundreds of thousands of IH tractors out there with the factory designed and sold "christmas tree" set up. They are wildly popular and very hard to find, they go for crazy ammounts on ebay. They are popular for a reason.

Those features are not mutually exclusive - you should not have to choose. It's usually a matter of setting a valve on the tractor. If you are building or buying one, it's a matter of choosing the right valve.
