Gooseneck Hitch Question

I've got a 89 F350 with a dump bed. I want to attach a gooseneck hitch to the frame. Are there any guidelines on where I should position the ball in relation to the rear wheels?

Also, what is the best way to determine what the axles on my trailer are rated for? No weight listed on the trailers tag, & haven't found any other tags yet.

Hi MH,

From reading alot of install instructions from several mfg's, there's less that 1% weight difference 4" behind the axle to 4" in front of the axle.

Me, I installed mine dead center and it pulls great. The only other thing you need to watch for on like a 5th wheel install is cab clearance in a jack knife turn.

We just hooked the one on our 1981 F350 right to the bottom in the dump bed. Has worked fine for years.

So it sounds slightly infront of the rear axle. That is what I was thinking, but did not know how far. Thanks for the input.

The ones I have had installed were placed 3 inches in front of the center of the rear axle.

The shop that installed a couple hitches for my folks always said to place the center of the hitch ~1/2" to ~1" in front of the center of the axle. It"s been 15 years, so I don"t remember exactly.

Where ever you place the hitch, make sure it is NOT behind the axle - as that would tend to lift the front of your tow vehicle and reduce ability to steer.
