I'm thinking of buying a car. Love my trucks but as I get older I would like afew more comforts. I'm looking at a 94 Lincoln Contienental. 115k miles. They're asking $2000 for it. Blue book is $4500.
My question is, I've read reveiws online about tranny problems and air ride repairs. Any owners on here with any opinions good or bad? Thanks.

Forgot which year they changed the Continental from the 3.8 to the 4.6.

Run from that car as fast as you can.

The 3.8 is notorious for blowing head gaskets, the transmission is a POS, the electronics will cost a mint just to keep the car on the road and suspension (FRONT and REAR) is in a word junk. For some reason everything that could go wrong did on that body style of Lincoln.

IMHO a Taurus or a Sable with the 3.0 engine of that vintage is a lot better car, they have a simpler electronics system and the rear suspension is a basic strut design. You still run into the transmission problem (two transmissions went into those cars one is a lot better then the other) but other then that they are good for 150K to 200K and they basically give them away at your nearest used car dealer.

For that money, you couldn't go too wrong. We bought a used Lincoln last year, and love it. No problems yet, and about 23 mpg average.
With that many miles on it, the one you're looking at maybe has had most of the problems (if any) fixed.
Good Luck

Just for everyone's information...

The 94 Continental still had a 3.8 liter V-6. The 3.8 had head gasket problems... and in my opinion Ford hasn't made a front wheel drive tranny that holds up yet.

just my 2 cents. the ford overhead cam v-8 engines have guide problems which cause a lot of oil consumption and smoke at take off once they reach operating temperture. dont take my word for it, just check them out at stop lights and stop signs. vickies, mercs, and lincolns, same engine. almost all are 70,000 + miles. had 2 mercurys as company cars.

It's a 4.6 but with totally differant heads, the valve seals were not an issue in the this engine.

Let me shed a little different light on the subject. I like my creature comforts also, but as I get older I find it more and more difficult to get into and out of those cars. The knees don't wanna bend, the hips don't work as well, and I am afraid of pulling myself up by holding onto the car door, the way they are built today the door might just come off. I think I'll stick to my truck and my wifes Durango. The Durango has just about every creature comfort a person could want, rides very nice, and I can easily get in and out.

Check out what a set of air springs and a compressor and brain go for. All are failure prone. There are a lot of lowrider Lincolns out there. Now if someone has alredy put the coil spring kit in then it isn't that bad.

Had friends with one of these. Had to give it away when he couldn't afford any more air bags. At the local scrap yard people haul them in still shiny and new looking to get scrap value for them.

Not a good transportation device in my book.

Dear Butcher, Between head gasket problems, air ride suspension problems, and trans problems, I would run from that vecicle. Not to mention the power window problems. It is much likely to end up being a money pit. Just an opinion, but I have worked for Ford dealerships for 24 years up till a few months ago.

Thats what I'm learning the more research I do. Sounds like that car had some serious design flaws. Thanks.

I think that $2000 is good deal. You will have to look it over real good for problems, and maybe have a cert. mechanic look at it too. Fords arent that bad. I had a 97 escort with 132,000 miles on it when I sold it to a used car guy for $700. There was nothing wrong with it, ran great with no problems. But I had to buy my wifes Saturn from the lease, she racked up the miles on it. I also have an old boss who had a 88 ranger with 200,000 + miles on it and he used synthetic oil in motor, trans and diff. Look at it this way, lets say the trans blows up, it is maybe $2500 for a new one and other problems might be $2000 in 2 years.

That car is at the point where it's gonna cause big expensive headaches. The problems you mentioned are only the start.
In my opinion,be better off buying a GM(LeSabre,Bonneville,Olds 88 or 98).Far less trouble and cheaper to repair.~brad
