Got the old h fired up after total engine overhaul last night. Adjusted carb, set points, and double checked the fluids, turned on the gas. I hit the started and it fired but quit.Hit the starter again it fired coughed smoothed out and purred like a kitten. Checked oil pressure, 25 pounds at idle and sixty if you take it up to full throttle.Didnt run it very long so this morning Im going to double check everything again get it started and retorque my head bolts and set the valves again. I posted on this last night and received only one reply I was so excited and felt let down after that so I went on to bed. But I was still very pleased with how good the old H sounded slept better last night than I have since I started this project. My wife even got excited and ran to the garage when she heard it fire up. I think she ready for a cub or possibly an A. Hope everybody else has as good a day as I Have had so far River Bottom Farmer

RBF, great going. Been following your progress on your H project. Sure feels good to finually get one to breath life again, especially after it has been sitting idle for a long period of time,,As John T says....Congratulations

Congrats. Sounds like you did it all right.
Dont let it idle too much you should do it under a load. Like a road drag or atleast drivr it around.Again congrats.

Congrats farmer, been there done that and its one heck of a thrill to hear one run after all the work. Ya know anytime after I rebuilt an engine n started it the first time I always idled them realllll ll slowwwww www n sweet thinking it was better to break n cut n wear in all the new tight metal junctions that way WRONG WEEDHOPPER from what I just read. It said NOT to idle them too slow cuz things dont get oil the way they ought to from pressure and/or splash like if they were ran at say even 1000 RPM.

Right after I got it started I turned the idle adjustment screw in on the side of the carb to bring the rpm up to about two thirds so it wouldnt be at idle I had heard not to let a fresh engine idle for prolonged periods. Im going to run it up to operating temperature again this morning and retorque my head bolt. How many times should I retorque the head bolts in your opinion. River Bottom Farmer

If it has chrome rings this is especially true. After you run it about 20 hours or less if this was an inframe job dump the oil and filter. Don't look at the oil because you may wonder where all the crud came from especially if an in frame. Keep a good load on the engine and do not lug it. Watch the temp and the oil pressure. I also sent you an e-mail about this. Just wondering is this a sleeve and piston or a ring job? On the retorque do as mentioned below. Questions?

Put it under a good load before the cylinders have a chance to glaze, or the rings may never fully seat... That would be within the first 20 minutes... Get the engine FULLY HOT..like it would be if you worked it for at least one full hour..THEN, re-torque the head and it should not need another re-torque.. Running the engine until it is fully Heat-saturated is very important, to get the head bolts and studs expanded, before re-torqueing..
