Have any of you ever adjusted the "clutch" or replaced one on these Polaris automatic transmissions? Mine has recently gotten hard to shift into gear smoothly. Mine is a 1998 model and has 4x4. Thanks!

Hey Allen. I have a 2002 Polaris 400. The linkage rod from the shifter handle to the tranny will get out of adjustment and cause the problem that you have described. It adjusts like a screendoor adjuster with a simple wrench. Look on the right side of the machine and you should see the rod. I do not remember taking any plastic off to get to it. The machine is almost impossible to get into gear when we have the choke set up so that it will idle high. Make sure your RPM's are at idle speed with the choke off before you try to get it into gear. Hope this helps. Do you have a service manual?!?

Allen: The linkages on these machines are prone to go out of adjustment, which can cause them to either not go into gear or to pop out. Also, like any centrifugal clutch, they should be cleaned occasionally. It takes a special puller to remove them, but other than that, they're pretty straightforward if you've ever worked on a snowmobile clutch.

My 97 400 sport has a snowmobile type clutch in it. There is no adjustment on it. Are you sure your linkages aren't binding and your idle speed is right. Mine has always taken some force and clunks when going into gear, especially reverse.

I have a 2001 400 sporstman and haven"t had problems shifting it. Could be something worn in there. They are run by a centrifical(sp)clutch and driven with a belt. Is it possible the belt is worn? I know I burned a flat spot on mine pulling my 8n home uphill after I burned out the coil . Easy to replace. Hope you find the problem. Check with the dealer and they will help you out I"m sure.-Bill
