How many of you out there are not farmers and have never been but are intrested in tractors? What is your background and how did you get interested? I was an underground miner for almost 40 years until a bad back forced me out. I always thought that those old Fords were sooo neat. Bought a smokey 2N to help with my place and the love affair began. Never noticed old tractors before, now they are everywhere. I'd love to have one of each.

I grew up on a farm in northwest Oregon where we raised chickens for eggs. My Father & his cousin raised prunes & cherries before I was born. They were never satisfied with "store-bought" machinery so they made what they needed. Allis Chalmers WC/WD45 engines with M&W kits, "Jimmy" diesels & flathead Ford engines figured prominently in their projects. Also, front transverse springs from mid '40s Ford trucks. I was the 4th generation to be on the farm, but the preceding 3 generations never made any money, so I saw no need to continue that tradition.

In my case it's, probably a case of the tractor making me what I am in a round about way. Dad grew up on his grandpa's tobacco farm. As it has been told to me, like any kid Dad didn't listen very well sometimes. So when his grandpa told him not to pull one of the smaller tractors out of a huge mud puddle with a much larger tractor, he went ahead and did it anyway. Problem was as he pulled the smaller machine out it hung up on a stump and he nearly pulled it in half. His grandpa made him repair it which got him interested in mechanic work. So, Dad grew up interested in and doing mechanic work so as I was growing up that's what I got interested in too. Now Dad and I work together as heavy equipment/crane mechanics. I love any kind of machine, wether it's something small like my old HB212 AC lawn tractor or a 250,000+ pound crane that can lift 100 tons. The older the better..... .

Raised on a farm in Kansas. Dad did not get a tractor until I was off the farm and in the navy. 55 years ago this May 18th. After the navy I worked telephones. Moved to the contry and bought a tractor (AC C) in 1975. Wife did not like it. She died of cancer in 1982. The wife I now have likes tractors. I now have four. The 335 is slowly getting to be the right color. New tires went on yesterday.

Richard: you don't have to be a Farmer to own a Tractor, all you have to have is a Need... If you don't have a need, your just wasting your time and money. It's like digging a hole, if you don't have a need for a hole --- don't dig it...

I grew up in SE Michigan. My father and his father grew strawberries when I was very young. They only had a Monkey wards walk behind tractor.
They also grew veggies, but those weren't to sell. My mothers people were farmers, but had sold out to the subs by the time I was old enough to remember much. They did truck farming, with 2 Fordson tractors. They grew most of thier own food. We had gardens, but until I moved to the sticks, never had a tractor. I bought an H, restored it, and later a 300u. No real thought behind color, just what I saw availible in the neighborhood. I kind of like the red stuff now!!! I am getting more ambitious now - trying to plant with a 2 row jd 70 and some other stuff. I guess this is better than going to the bar - cheap thearphy!! :)

I'm actually a second generation collector. My father farmed a little bit when he was growing up, but he didn't really start collecting tractors until after he started working as a mechanic for the local Case dealership. He was sent on a service call to Flemingsburg, Kentucky and came home with a Model "C" and a Model "L" Case. We collected Cases from that point on, and when he passed away on April 9 of this year, a picture of the Model "L" was engraved on his headstone.

Hey Brian,

Really sorry to hear about your dad. Never had a chance to meet him but always remember him at the show. God bless.

I'm one of those want a B farmers . As a kid I was raised in a family of 11 kids . So my Dad always had a tractor . The first one waas a Massey Pony until he rolled it over an embankment . So he bought a Ford 640 new . He used land from shut down farms to raise acres of potatoes , sweet corn , & vegetables . We ate what we grew & never went hungry . I started driving his tractors at 7 yrs of age . Then in the 60s he hired his tractor out to the highway dept to mow berms & I was the operater . A lot of good memories . I remember doing the crops with the sickle bar hanging on the side while doing all the field prepping . His last Ford was a special ordered 601 Workmaster with the heavy duty frt axle . I wish I would've bought it from him in the 70s but my wife gave me the altimatum - her or the tractor . I finally bought my first tractor (9n) in the 80s . Then in 1999 traded up to a 640 . Then she walked out on me .After that I had a Sherman hi/lo installed in it . Now I also have a 1952 8n Funk conversion I'm slowly restoring . I installed a Sherman hi/lo in it myself . So anxious to get it running to be a show tractor only . That's my want a be a farmer life story . Ken

I grew up in Oregon. My father was mechanic/shop foreman/service manager for an IH dealer for most of the time I was growing up, so I was always around engines, trucks, equipment, etc. The area was mostly orchards & logging, so us kids grew up picking fruit every summer. I've always had an interest in things mechanical and electrical, & grew up in a family that was pretty self sufficient, to the point of building our own house.

My father was always interested in antique cars, engines, machinery, etc., but couldn't really aford to play with anything until after I was off at college. Of course within a couple years after I graduated & got my first engineering job on the east coast I ended up married & with a family, so other interests kind of took a back seat. My father died about 15 years ago (lung cancer, smoked all his life) right after he finally retired, & my mother paniced about money & sold almost everything he had. At the time, my wife & I had adopted some special needs kids out of the Los Angeles county foster care system, & I had neither money nor time to pursue much in the way of hobbies.

Finally at a point in my life where most of the kids are out of the house & my career has progressed to where I actually have some extra spending money. We moved from southern California to Colorado about a year ago. We have 4 acres on the outskirts of Denver, and I just got a shop building put up. Got lots of projects to keep me busy. Been fortunate to have jobs I mostly enjoyed, and will be eligible to retire in about 6-1/2 years. Maybe then I can get some of this stuff finished!

Have a Farmall H that more or less earns its keep mowing & moving dirt, a 1950 McCormick WD-6 with a loader, a 1930 Farmall Regular (my toy), a couple old vehicles, & a bunch of little stuff. Also fortunate to have a wife that realizes I'll never survive if I have to sit around & do nothing when I retire & encourages me to acquire projects.

Keith

Well back when I was 15 or 16 (I'm 21 now) I decided I needed something to move my dead trucks around that I was building, stripping etc. Had to get a farmer friends down the road to come up with the tractor to tow and old s-10 out behind my house. I decided I needed a tractor to tow my junk around. I got a AC 5030 tractor with a loader. Was sitting behind a barn, sat for 12 years before I got it, had it for about 4 years. Year and a half ago I got it fixed and running again. Next I wanted something to dig with, Bought a JD 420C with a loader and has been real handy. I wanted and old JD tractor to putter around with, and a buddy of mine had an old JD 'A' that was desinted as a lawn ornament, for $300, bought it and worked on it most of last summer. It made it to plowday last fall. Neighbor had a JD70 skidsteer, he sold it to me and my dad, my dad used to run one where he used to work and wanted it, real handy. Buddy of ours had a JD 720 gasser he reluctantly sold to us, mostly because it cost alot to mow his fields with..7-8 gallons an hour with a 14ft batwing bush hog. I just finished rebuilding my 6 foot bush hog today, the 720 runs it pretty good. As far as my backround goes, I grew up near a few farms, always liked the tractors...I was the kid with a sandpile and tonka trucks when I was young, and it all came back to haunt me LOL. I got my first tractor out of a utility type need and it turned into a big hobby.
