Hi All, Got a question.

Today I slopped thru the mud to haul hay to see if this little Hydro 70 could actually accomplish anything worthwhile.

Okay fine. But when I got done I noticed that the inner tube is pouchin' out of the left rear tire in three places.

Tractor has 13.6 X 38 tires on 12" rims now. What do I want to order again? 14.9s?

Gotta have this rascal to pull the drill as soon as it dries up, hopefully by Friday or Saturday.

Allan

Hey Allen, in the second picture those bales are pert near flat on the bottom side. What kind of round baler did you use on them? Look mighty loose. Tom

Hi Tom,

I didn't bale 'em; they belong to the prior owner. :>)

That bale was stacked on top of the stack. Noticed it was pretty flat when I took it off with the loader too. :>)

At what location do we normally measure the rim width? I measure the rim width inside the first drop. Is this correct?

If by first drop you mean the drop nearest the edge of the rim, that the tire fits into, that is correct.

Looked at the Weather Channel for this weekend? Looks like you'll have lots of time to tire shop....or look for that MFWD for the "H". I been hurrying all week trying to beat that storm, I might make it!

Allan, 14.9x38 would be a little bit narrow on a 12 inch rim, but will work fine. I don't know if you are anywhere near a Nebraska Tire dealer, but normally Bruce at the Firth store has the best deals. If you are unable to find 14.9's go for the 16.9's not the 15.5's. I always figured going bigger is better. JohnG

You will find out that 16.9x38 is WAY too much tire for a HYDRO. Tried that on my H70-312, and quickly returned to 15.5s. A 14.9 on a wider rim would make a gasser bog. The 13.6s are a good match for your gasser. Somebodt speced it that way when new, and he knew what he was doing. ....QR..

Hope they got them in stock. Up here, it seems that everything is on back order(ie: gone to China) Guys buying dump trucks say they order tires first, then pick the options. I have been waiting 4 weeks now for a tire from Firestone. They keep saying "We'll call you when it comes in!". Yeah, right.

Hi Kent,

No, they didn't have 'em like I figured. They have to bring 'em in from Rapid City so they tell me I can't get 'em mounted until 9am Friday morning.

That works unless they back me up another day. :>(

Hey buddy, that was the mismatched set when you got them wasn't it? Just get a replacement for the bad tire to match the good tire and away ya go. Harley

Naw,

Darned tires are just too little anyways. If I gotta buy, I'm getting a set.

Just went out there and measured the darned rims with a tape. Mounting lip wall to mounting lip wall is 13" and almost 14" to the outsides of the rim, so I think I'm okay.

Still got to lift one of the fenders 2" yet and then she's ready fer a ride to town. Tire shop says they charge $3 a mile now for a service call;

It's too derned far out in the country for that kind of money.

Allen, I just went from 15.5's to 14.9's on my 544D. The 14.9's grag a heck of a lot better than them 15.5's, seem to keep me about about as well in the softer ground and look better too, not that looks help anything, unless your female. If I were you though I would go with 16.9's on that Hydro 70, even if you have to get different rims. Heck its only money:>)

You might be happier with 15.5-38's for running in the mud as the wider ones provide more floatation.

Hey Allan

I believe that the tire usually says mounted on a 12" rim. Whatever the tire size its usually an inch smaller. hope this helps

Greg

14.9s might be pushing it a bit on 12 inch rims

I thought 14.9 called for 12" rims?

Yes, the 14.9 was designed for a 12" rim. The 15.5 is popular in replacing the 13.6 as they are the same profile. I put 15.5's on 14" rims on my DC CASE as I didn't want to raise my gearing with the 14.9. 14.9 looks/works very well in 12" rim. If you have 14" rims, I'd go with the 16.9"s with a 60-70hp tractor. Ive always been told the rim should be one number samll then the tire not counting the point behind the number. Or in other words a 13 inch tire on 12 inch rim and a 14 on a 13 inch etc. You could get by with the 14.9 but that is 2.9 inches wider then the rim so you would have a lot of tread for that size rim.

You are correct, a 13 inch tread width tire on a 12 inch rim. When they changed the way tires were measured, they used cross section. A 13 inch tread width tire has a 14.9 in cross section. In other words 13-38 and 14.9-38 are identical. The point behind the number thing is wrong -- you have to convert the new designation back to the old designation.

So Allan said he had 13.9 on 12 inch rims which is the right size for that rim. Unless the company that makes the tire has on the side wall 14.9 on 12 inch rim the 14.9 is to big for the rim. Some companys make them for the norrower rim some don't. My old boss who owns one of if not the biggest company for vinage tires always said drop the point and if the tire was say a 6.50 then it fit a 5 inch rim etc. I beleive he knew what he was doing sine he owns the dies from almost all the tires from the 20s,30s,40,50,60,and 70s, for car/truck tires the ones no one makes any more. He probably the only place that can get you the same tire that came on say a 1930s ford car and it will be the same tire as what was on it new. He taught me about 75% of what I now know about tires and fixing them.

I am by far no expert but I just bought tires for my cockshutt. 14.9s are for 13, 13.6 are for 12.

Here is a link to the chart I used. From Miller tire.
