I'm sure this will bring many different opinions but here it goes. Is Amsoil really any better than a regular full synthetic oil like mobil 1 etc? Also I want to run synthetic in the kohler engine in my cub cadet. The engine has an unknown number of hours on it. But when I changed the head gasket there isnt any ridge on the cylindar and the bore is nice and clean. Will I have any problems running synthetic now when only regular oil was used before?

Synthetic out performs mineral oil during extreme heat, extreme cold and during extreme pressure. If your Cadet doesn't operate under these conditions then synthetic's advantages are fewer. There is the real synthetic that Mobil, Amsoil & Royal Purple manufacture. Anthing else labeled synthetic isn't a true synthetic.

Whereas I run an oil testing lab, I found the testing data interesting. ICP results on metals
are not really repeatable at less than 20ppm, so I find that data skewed. The latest version of the test is 5185-02 and the reproducibility numbers don't agree at all. Also + or - 32 degrees F on a flash point is ridiculus. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that testing data report, but it sure looks pretty doesn't it? My guess is that it's a Tribology lab report and you get what you pay for as they say. You can make numbers do whatever you want. I was just wondering what kind of a Quality Control the lab uses for their testing. We calibrate with API and Nist standards. You will notice there is no mention of quality control. You are to just blindly believe.

Synthetic oil is not some super slick substance that prevents wear any more then regular motor oil. It has two advantages, less thermo break down and the ability to suspend more impurities. The combination of those two qualities is why synthetic oil can run longer between oil changes.

If you are not running an engine in extreme conditions (and I really doubt you are in your Cub Cadet) you gain little except for a new way to spend more money. Some newer small engine manuals do allow for the use of synthetic oil but recommend the same oil change interval, so you gain nothing by synthetic oil’s ability to suspend more impurities.

As for the "thinner" claims, 10W-30 is 10W-30 dino, synthetic or fake synthetic, if it where thinner then that the viscosity number would change - to 5W-20 or 0W-20.

I run Amsoil 15/40 in my Miller Trailblazer welder/generator. I ran Mobil 1 in my air cooled motorcycle, but I wanted 15-40 rather than 10-30 or 15-50. Mobil 1 doesn't come in 15-40. Only have about 20 hrs since I switched but can't be too carefull with an air cooled engine that fires up cold to full speed. BobG in VA

I use Amsoil in my Ford Diesal truck. I've used it for a couple years now. I do like it and I'll continue to use it. One thing i like most about it is in the cold winter time. With regular oil on a cold start the motor would clatter and chatter like crazy untill it would get up to temp. With Amsoil I noticed a big differance whith the cold starts. The noise was knocked down by at least half. Another good thing is you don't half to change the oil as much and it seems to stay cleaner for longer then your normal oil. I think they told me I could go a whole year without changing the oil,but I do it twice just to make me feel better. It doesn't hurt to switch to synthetic oil. You can do it anytime and you can stop using it and go back to your normal oil at anytime. It doesn't matter you can switch back and forth if you would want to. Is it better then others?? Don't know for sure, but they are into alot of racing and there is nothing more hard on a engine then racing them and they got the proof as to what goes on so its up to you and your way of thinking. Hope this helps!

I was an Amsoil distributor many years ago. I will tell you what I have seen. I saw pictures of an engine that had used Amsoil for 75,000 miles and still had the original cylinder hone marks, from the factory. I trust the products. As to them being better than others, I simply do not know. I do know that Amsoil is good.

I had the head off my "83 pickup at 252K. No ridge and still had the crosshatch on #2 cylinders. I didn"t rotate the engine to check the others.
I used plain old 10-30 Quaker State and changed per Mfg. recomendation(7500) plus a few. Still clean as a bell except for some residue in the top of valve cover baffles.
