Paint or original, which do you prefer?

Things are slow, and I have to kick up the mud a little bit. What do you guys prefer to see, vintage tractors with a new paint job, or in original working clothes? If painted, with or without clear-coat? If original, with as many of the dings and dents taken out as possible, or with all the "character marks" left on?

Try to keep the fist fighting to a minimum. Don't want you guys to get too many black headlights or bloody precleaners. ;-)

I want to see them as I remeber them when they were either new or close to it.I don't like to see tractors that appear to have had a rough life.Kind of like viewing pictures of women on the obituary page.I like to see pictures of them when they were young and pretty.Fancy is the word that comes to mind.lol, bob

All Original-just as they came from the field. Painted ones are pretty, but boring. A tractor that shows it's battle scars from a lifetime of work has character and tells a story. Welds, different colors of paint, aftermarket parts, various parts of mounted attachments left on, worn mismatched tires, etc., all make it more interesting. The 101st restored M you see does not look much different than the first or 20th, except perhaps showing the amount of time or money the current owner has. A working tractor has clues about how it was used and cared for the last 50 or 60 years or so. For example, weighted down and fluid added to the tires, baling wire hanging from the seat or fender to hold the trip rope handy but not too secure, drawbar pin hole twice original length indicate heavy use on the plow. Different tread and wear patterns on the rear tires may indicate hard times when a rear tire was ruined and not enough money to replace both. Paint and tinwork give clues about care and use-cared for and maintained, or used and abused. Maybe always shedded on a nice neat grain farm, or a lifetime of abuse sitting outside the year around on a loader and manure spreader. A show quality restoration wipes away most of what makes a tractor a tractor. (and a tractor without an implement is pointless) Just my rants and ravings-most people like shiny paint.

I like to see the real dolled-up, pretty ones working and getting dirty. Then they look all that much better when they get a bath. A well looked after original paint job looks great though, almost like the sheet metal is that color instead of just a coating.

I've looked at thousands of tractors and average gets pretty ho-hum. I always enjoy seeing something in exceptional condition and or rare and unusual.

Paint em if you have to and they need it. Those over done candy-apple-red-gloss things turn me off. So do women covered with the same crap. But I know! some men like that sort of thing.

I'd say,

1 Original (minor dings)
2 As close as you can get (factory, fixed up)
3 Car paint (low gloss, no clear coat)
4 Some kinda paint (preferably the right colors)

I love how the "restoration police" rag on folks if they have one little item out place (hex nut instead of a square head). Then turn right around and use modern car paint and clear coats to make it all shinny.

The antique patina of original paint looks great on well kept machines. But I think this is relatively rare. Dinged-up, rusty outdoor dwelling machines look better with a decent coat of paint.

A nice new shiney coat of paint does look nice. But that just makes it fun to take em to the field and get them dirty again.

Original if at all possible. Then, I like to do the "sloppin' on" of the paint". :>)
