One of the big old gas tractors (Aultman-Taylor?) used a glass 1/2 pint milk bottle for a sediment bowl. They included a cast-iron bottle in the tool box for replacement in the field if the glass one was broken. So these silly things have been giving grief since tractors were born.

I think I finally found a way to keep the sediment bowls from leaking other than by not putting fuel in the tractor. I have found it works pretty well to use an o-ring instead of a gasket. If others try this successfully, please let us know. Maybe I was just lucky for a change.

Ya know everybody complains about cleaning them darn things, but certain models and brands of tractors don't have sediment bowls. Believe me one tractor I have dosn't have one and I've siezed the injection pump and ruined the nozzles on it. I'll tell you life is alot easier just cleaning the sediment bowls on my other tractors when I see crud in them.

Seems like every time I clean one of those I can never get the bowl to seal right afterwards, although it is a small sample size...

You need to keep a bushel basket full of bowl gaskets (more or less) so you have a new one to put back up there every time you remove the bowl. Jim

Do people stop caring when they get old? I use my dad's 656 so I maintain it for him for free. Decided to change the thermistat since it was running a little hot. He sees this and says that I just needed to "take something apart". Then I told him it really ought to have an air filter, and he says " just blow it out". This all coming from a guy that was super peticular about everything. I guess thats what happens when you get old.

Do people stop servicing when they get old? YES! I learned how to care for things properly and meticulously from my Dad... does he maintain and clean things since I've left home? Nope. I usually spend about a week every time I'm home, just changing oil, power washing, vacuuming, etc.

I just dunno how I learned to be the way I am... he must have been different in his younger days.

Allan, Darn your time! You would bring up the one project that I dred more that anything. First the little nut won't unscrew right. Just to the point that you will just barely be able to get the sediment bowl off.
Next, cleaning the dam little thing, If I don't drop it, and break it all to pieces... and them cost me a run to town. ,... If I do get it clean, get the little jam nut to work smoothly, I get it installed.....I surenough, LEAK like a garden hose running at full blast.
Wait till the water/junk line gets closer to the top. Then next time in town get a new one,... Then R&R... I hate thes little things! LOL!
Later,
John A.

Yep, that's never fun to see and makes you wonder what else you get to service along with it.

I went out yesterday to fix the tire on a JD 2955 loader tractor. This tractor feeds the cows and whatever so it sees much use and abuse on a daily basis. You would think that it would have the best of care but the first thing I noticed after I started it was that there was no muffler. Just diesel exhaust coming out of the hood. And I wondered what the old coat was on the hood for. Yep, when I went around to the front I saw a sleave was the fuel cap. Nice tractor, such a shame. So Allan I would say comparing the two tractors yours has a ways to go.
