I planted Sudan 2 weeks ago the Sudan has just started to germinate but, the weeds after our rain have sprouted vigorously. Can I spray with 2,4-d (Pasture Pro) to knock the weeds out now or do I need to wait until the Sudan has established itself? I hate to lose moisture to weeds!

We use to spray it in the past too when for hay but yes it will burn it some and stunt it if turns off real hot and dry. Like the others said check local to see what they recommend. We had problems with pre plant chemicals as it could stunt it or if heavy hard rains came at wrong time as it was just coming up and tender the rain splashed chemical on it from the soil and killed some of it and stunted it enough to cause a replant through it with a disc drill. At least you got rain to sprout something and showers here over weekend barely settled the dust.

We got about 1" a couple days ago, fell nice and slow. They are predicting a chance of showers tonight and maybe another chance later in the week. I am still hurting from the lack of rain last year, pastures are rough and my tanks are still low. We were lucky with the fires though -- none too close and a lot of tired volunteers kept the few that were close under control unlike some of the folks in TX and OK!

I'm in TX too, and I know what you are going through. At least your sudan is up, some of ours hasn't got planted yet. Just be careful about burning up your crop. You will set it back a little but by spraying (burn/wilt a little) since we haven't had a whole lot of rain. what weeds are they??

Mainly broadleaf (goldenrod, nettle, lambsquarter, milkweed, etc..). It also looks like I will raise a good thistle crop! I worked the seedbed back in early March expecting to plant 1st week of April, we got a heavy rain late March and I got distracted with corn and didn't get the sudan drilled until mid April and gave the weeds a head start.

Wayne Go visit with your local Ag Chemical dealer!
They will know what work best for your area, soil type, moisture condition, etc, etc. Then follow their recomendations to the T. For if you get the rate too light---you wasted you money and time. Too heavy you wasted your time money and crop.
Later,
John A.
