JD 5420 popping out of gear while going downhill?

My JD 5420 popped out of gear while going downhill, causing it to get out of control. It was being driven by a kid I trust who claims that he did not push the clutch. I am now trying to get to the bottom of this to prevent a repeat. Has anyone had similar problems or heard of this happening? Or does anyone know what may have caused this? About 4 months ago, at 730 hours, I had the trans pretty much overhauled after clip holding park pawl broke causing chipped teeth in several gears. This work was done by my normal shop.

When I was in high school, there was a recall on the transmission on the JD 5300 for that very thing, and sadly being a school, the tractor was locked in the shed and couldn't be started until after JD fixed it even though it had never popped out of gear before and the chances were pretty small and we only got to use a very short time. JD changed some little thing in there so it wouldn't happen, but I would have thought it would have gotten fixed by the 20 series, but you might want to check anyway.

Jonfarmer, thanks for the reply. Mind me asking how long ago this was? Sorry about the double-posting, still sort of learning my way around this internet stuff.

This was back in 2001 that the school was notified.

I haven't such a problem (yet!) out of my 5320 but JD and I are going around and 'round right now. I know your mahine is a tad bigger.....but for what I bought, I am getting more unhappy by the day. My tractor has 70 hours on it! It supposedly dyno'd 58 PTO horses prior to delivery. Hook it to a 3 bottom 14" Ford 101 plow, 4 wd engaged and 541 loader attached.....if the wheels aren't spinning, the engine's tongue is hanging out when running in 2nd B range. This tractor is too light and has no balls. Get a bucketful of dirt and turn on uneven ground and pray the loaded rears don't come off the ground. They quit engineering enough iron in these tractors and want to sell you 3000 more pounds of weights at $1 a pound....a real crock of manure! No, I aint happy!

Deeer made a huge mistake repalcing the 55 Manhiem series with the 5000 series over grown lawn tractors. Rather than a 5000/5010/5020/5025? Either purchase a 5105 or a small 6000 20 series.

Sounds like I can expect more problems with the 5420, what else is on the horizon? Also, I am still trying to figure out the details of that recall on the 5300.
