Hello. I have a kohler 7hp engine in a cub cadet that is giving me fits. Had it running last fall now I can"t get any spark to the plug. I cleaned and checked the gap on the points, the plug is clean and might as well be new. With the key on I have power to both sides of the coil and at the points. I"m out of ideas and I can"t find anything in my manual that I missed. Thanks.

Connect a test light to the POINTS side of the coil. (With the ignition "ON".)

Points open... light on.

Points closed... light off.

Engine cranking... light blinking as points open and close.

How does your's compare with this?

I've seen the push rod that opens the points from the cam stick. Usually worn or gooked up with oil sludge which is likely the case if your motor is 40 years old. The points seem to open and close fine when you turn the motor by hand, but the rod sticks when the motor is spun at speed by a starter/generator. Usually an easy fix. take the points off and pull the rod out and clean it. if its worn, replace it.

have you replaced the spark plug wire? If it is not a wire cored wire, you cannot get fire to plug. Do you have power to both sides of coil all the time or does it come and go as the engine is turning over?. you should have 12 volts to the pos side of coil, then the voltage to the negative side of coil should go from 12 volts to o volts and back to 12 volts as you turn the engine over. Did you file points with a point file then take a clean peice of paper and clean the contacts?? If you did not use a point file, you may have corrosion causing your problems. If you did all this, it should run.

while we are on the subject of kohlers i have a 8hp k181 and i was wondering if anybody knew what oil it took because i need to know to get it running. if i didnt that could be another 135.00 to get it bored not counting gaskets and piston and rod.

Back when they were made I think they used 30w in the summer and 10w in the winter. I generally use 10w30. Mike.

Is the plunger that operates the points moving? I had B&S once that sat over the winter and that part corroded; wouldn't retract after opening points. I'll skim through my small engine book later, that's just the first thing that comes to mind, given what you've already checked.

I checked that when I checked the points gap. So I don't think thats what it is. Mike.

With the key on, if you open the points by hand do you see a spark?? If you don't your cleaning of the points probably didn't work

I agree. They sure can look good and be gaped right and still not work. Take the wire off the points and touch it to ground, make sure you have good ground, over and over. See if you get spark on known good plug. If not then put a test light on the + side and do it again. If light goes out you have wiring troubles. If it stays lit, and you can verify the wire from the coil to the points is not shorted to ground, coils bad.

My moneys is on a set of points that look like they working but are not. BTDT many, many, times. Usally the first thing I do is rotate engine to open the points, then short the points with screw driver to see if everthing else is working.
