I purchased a battery golf cart from down the road about a mile.. The batteries are dead and I want to know if I can tow the golf cart behind my tractor without damaging the golf cart. I know you can't pull hydro transmission lawn mowers without setting some lever . What about golf carts??

Yeppers, you can. I'm pretty familiar with some guys that travel the country with 100s of golf carts that they rent out at NASCAR and IRL events, and sometimes they break down. One of their golf carts actually has a small hydraulic jack operated boom with a hook on it used to lift the front ends of the broken down golf carts and tow them back to be repaired. They also use that little tow truck of sorts to tow fresh golf carts to the users for whom they're picking up the broken down golf carts. So long as you don't have the park brake set, its not in gear while its not running. The clutch engages by centifugal force, is disengaged when not running or not accelerating.

I kind of figure if its good enough for those guys whom make their living by relying on running golf carts, oughta be ok for you.

Sorry, I take it back in reply to Mark - IN., 04-19-2006 16:06:46
I just caught the part about your golf cart being electric/battery. Everything that I told you applies to EZ-GO gas. I don't know about electric/battery. The ones used at the races are gas. I'd hate to see you make a mistake off of my potentially bad info. You'd be ok with gas, I don't know about battery powered.

Sorry, I sounded off too soon.

Lift the back up with the three point hitch and tie the steering wheel in one position and tow it home that way.

If the golf cart is a regen then no, do not tow it. You will burn up the motor. Check to see if it has a switch under the seat that says "Tow/Run". If it there then place it in tow position.
Tow it from the rear with the wheels off the ground if you're not sure.
What kind of golf cart is it and what year? Post the model and serial numbers.
Check on the forum below for exact answers.

Yeppers, those are exactly the ones rented out at the races.

Is a trick you can do too, depending on the cover over the governor to tie a string to it, run it out the little hole by the choke knob, and pull it while at full throttle and... away she'll fly, and I do mean fly to the point of shimmying. Yeee Haaaw! Been there, done that. Take the string off before turn them back into the golf cart guys.

There is no chain to remove, looks like direct drive from motor to differencal. Batteries are dead and won't charge?

I have gas golf carts, but electric should be the same. There should be a Neutral position on the shifter right below the center of the seat...all the way one direction is forward, the middle is neutral and all the way the other way is reverse.

Good luck with it Tim

Likely ok if normal cart operating speed isn't exceeded. Is there a drive chain or something you can remove? Could the batteries be charged and drive it home?
