Bought a used IH 1466 gas tractor last year. The past winter, I started it up, but the steering wheel would not turn the wheels. I guessed it was water in the hydraulic fluid and it was froze up. Now I am changing the fluid. The users manual says it has 22.5 gallons of fluid, I pulled the drain plug but only got about 5 gallons out. How do I get the rest of it out, do I need to drain all of the cylinders (front end loader) individually? There is no 3 point hitch.

Tom,

Are you sure we're dealing with a 1466?

Never heard of that rascal in a gas version. That's a huge tractor (150 hp) to be running on gas.

Fact is, the biggest IH 66 series I've ever ran across was the 766 gas. Interesting, to say the least. :>)

No need to drain cylinders. If you got only 5 gal out of a 22 gal sump- that's likely why the steering didn't work- simply low on oil. Hydraulic system usually has a priority valve that sends the first few gpm to the steering system, rest for hydraulic remotes, 3ph, transmission if hydraulic controlled. Did you check oil level before starting to drain it?

Yes, the fluid level was at normal on the dip stick. Once things thawed out this spring, everything seems to work okay.
