Lovely start to the day. 5:30 AM I hear the ruckus and race out there. Fell over something the kids left on the lawn and wrecked myself up pretty good. Just another coon inside of one of my coon-proof chicken pens. Lost some Red Jungle Fowl and a couple of white Silkies. Still can't figure how it got in there. Found it sitting on a perch next to my big Brahma rooster, aimed best I could and said a little prayer for the rooster, and knocked him off the perch, the coon that is. He raced by me and went over the fence into the woods. Left a pretty good blood trail so he shouldn't be hard to find. It's a high population year for these damn things and I have had enough damage already. Happens about every 6-8 years and then they come crawling out of the woods late summer sick with distemper and worse. Some fella posted a while back that he buys something at TSC and mixes it with Coke. If anyone has the recipe, could you shoot me an e-mail? I'm thinkin I don't want to fight this all summer. E-mail is open or post it here. Much appreciated.

My father use to take them down the road to a pond and drown them, or almost. That way they never made their way back. That was 10 years ago, and saw the first racoon in our back yard last week in about 7 years.

Blue streak fly bait: 2 OZ, Soda pop (Dark & sweet) 4 oz. You'll kill dogs, cats EVERYTHING so please be careful. Check out backyardchickens.com on the pests and predators forum. Good luck, they'll usually be found within 20 feet of bait.

That's what I was lookin for, thanks! Make a dent in the population so the trap can stay ahead of them. Hate to do it. Waste of a good coon. Used to hunt them at night and shoot them out of the trees. Then came all these neighbors....
You know the story. Thanks again.

Well, the final count...3 Red Jungle Fowl and one white Silkie rooster. The rooster was a spare. The other three were a nice trio I could have sold for a good price. I raised them last fall. Hatched them late and barely got them feathered when winter hit. I have a spare pair of these from the same clutch. All told he missed the two extra JF, a pair of white Silkies, a couple odd birds, and my big pair of light Brahma, thank heavens. I should mention my pens are REALLY tight and fenced top and sides with rabbit cage wire. Frames are sunk in the ground a good depth.
This one had a plywood top that had sagged from snow and he found a crack he could squeeze thru.
I am a relentless trapper and usually have my box trap as well as a couple of jump traps set. The reason I want to bait them is that there are just too many this year. By the time I trap them out they will have torn up something else. Guess I'll put out bait for a night or two and then go back to the traps. I can easily trap 3-4 a week all summer long if I keep at it.

I've had trouble last year with raccoons and my pens. At first they went thru the thin side wire I had.. So I put some real stiff hardware cloth up on the sides and that stopped them for a while, but then they found that a few of my large chicken pens only had plastic 'avairy' netting on the top to keep the hawks out, so they climbed the wall and chewed thru the top. Finally added wire mesh to the top and have had no more losses. Add to that That i pretty much try to shoot any critter taking my livestock.. that tends to permanently stop them as well.

For those with possum problems, if you are trying to keep them out of flower beds and hedges, go get a 2$ bag of blood meal, and sprinkle it around your flower beds and especially where they are digging. Hold your breath and use gloves... stuff smells like a dead cow.. er.. well.. I guess it's made from cows blood.. so that's why! ( great nitrogen source too. ) I've tried this one and it works. Had to treat my MIL's place as the possum were marchin in in droves to root hru her flower beds nightly.. after the application.. never seen evidence of them again..

I've got the same problem with possums. Difference is they stink! So far I've caught 23 around my house. Using the traps and turning them loose in the woods 15 miles from here. Hoping there is a hungry fox around. I have heard if you spray fox urine around they won't stay there but haven't tried it yet. May work on coons also.

Dave,
I"ve had the same problem only I don"t have any livestock. I have this woodpile and they seem to claim it for there home.
I"ve tried shooting them with a 22 rifle but I can"t hit the broad side of a barn if I tried.

The stuff you’re thinking of that you mix with coke I have seen it but can"t remember the name. Our local feed mill has it.

I been caughting a few with a live trap till the last one had a bad temper. It latterly clawed its way out of the trap. Of course the place where I got the trap wouldn"t warranty it.

My mom had had problems with the varmints also they actually was try to rip off the siding at her place to get in the house. I could never understand why they took the bounty off them. They"ve really become a nuance.
Mike

Shooting definatly works, but if it's illegal where you are right now, because some places have a season on them, you might want to go the have-a-heart trap route, and bait it with a cracker with some peanut butter on it, coons LOVE peanut butter, and you'll be able to empty your trap a couple times a night in areas with alot of coons. After you catch them, you can take them for a ride and bless somebody else with them. Post back when your unsure what to do when you accidently get a skunk caught in it ;'D yes I speak from experience and have caught skunks too, your alright as long as you cover the trap and I have never tried to move one during the day, never got sprayed yet!. One thing I do as a precaution to stay safe while releasing critters, is I put down the tailgate on my truck and stand on the edge of it and realease the animal off over the end, that way, they drop away from me and don't have a chance to bite. Oh yeah, and skunks have big long claws, and they will be able to hold themselves really good inside that trap, so just dumping them out usually doesn't work, so standing the trap up on end and shaking it usually is what it takes. Good luck, hope this helps, stay safe and pick up your kids toys!

To prevent the spread of American-strain rabies in Ontario it's against the law to release a racoon more than 1/2 mile from where you caught it. It's o.k. to kill nuisance animals though, I think.

The Ministry of Natural Resources spent two summers innoculating every racoon they could get into a trap to create a 50-mile buffer zone around the Thousand Islands Bridge. So far it seems to have worked, but the population seems to be creeping up a bit. Maybe the innoculated specimens are healthier.

Can't even go 1/2 mile in Connecticut.

Since Racoon Rabies (what Ontario's dealing with now) arrived in 1991, you're not allowed to relocate trapped mammals off property.

Absolutely amazing how the racoon population plummetted and has been kept down...hardly ever see a road kill today (my record was 3 at once in a total accident...had Mom's car and was praying I didn't break anything!). Did find one dead in my then fenced in garden one day...I'm sure he had to have been rapid to get stuck in there!

coyotes in packs get a few. Have seen pics taken at bait stations of a coyote at each end of a coon, tearing it apart.

Guys, please don't catch and release. All your doing is sending your problem to someone else. Plus you are helping spreading disease if the animal is sick. Some areas its illegal to transport wild animals due to disease. Put the animal down if you catch in a trap. Shoot, drown, or whatever. Just don't transfer your problem somewhere else. remember, someone else might have sent you their trouble animal.
