I was cruising around the net this afternoon.
Went to the web site of my old ship.
Saw this...

I guess you can't save them all...

My ship, the USS Recovery ARS43, commissioned 1945 was given to Taiwan in 1998 under the "security assistance program" ???. Escaped our scrapyards but my guess is that she's already become a whole new fleet of Asian cars. Drive your Isuzu's proudly. Thier metal has served us well.

Funny you should say that. Some years ago, a former President who's name I won't mention was going to have our ammo made in China. ?!?!? Unbelievably, even the media said no to that one.

This past saturday needed new tires on one of my pickups, so to the tire guy. While I was waiting, they had a set of those 22" spinner gangbanger type of rims that some put on Cadillacs and Lincolns that make them set 8' off of the ground. Went for like $1,500 a piece, and were stamped Made in China on the inside. Even gangbanger rims. Is nothing sacred?

Your's has done better than either of mine, especially considering it's a WW2 vintage. My first ship was a 50's/60's vintage, Coontx class, ex DLG, reclassified as William V Pratt (DDG-44) I served on her from '87-'89. Last I heard she was already scrapped. My second and last ship I had the pleasure of serving aboard from '89-'91. She was the only modern ship to carry the name America, was the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) She was also late50's/early60's vintage. Last I saw of her was a wreath floating on the water where they had sunk her for an artificial reef. What a sad end to these great old ships. Not that I'd go back in the Navy again with things being as political as they are nowdays, but I'd never take anything for the time I spent at sea on either one of these fine fighting ships.....

And no Baltimore class cruisers were saved. All scrapped.

USS Boston CAG-1 E Div. 59-62
