What do I need to do to prep a field for planting pumpkins. I"m gone out to find a 3-12" bottomw plow and a set of dics. How big is too big for a 40hp tractor? Secondly, I know it"s going to take this year to get it ready from next, but can I start about any time this year say end of May beginning of June? I"m just hoping it doesn"t turn out to be as tough as Allan"s field he did there. Thanks.

I've grown 1-3 acres of pumpkins for many years. Just broke sod last week to expand patch for this year, if you want a crop this year, there's plenty of time. Roundup, wait a week, plow, wait a week, disc several times before planting (Early to mid June here) and go for it. PPI Command to help with weeds & grasses. Consider a one row transplanter (Tobacco setter), sell for like $50 around here. Take the pocket chain off, have helper drop seed down chute. Seed size varies greatly between varieties and you'll constantly be seeking (Cutting) new plates with a planter. Works great for me!

I'm curious about your comment that you want to use this year to get ready for planting next year. Is there a reason you can't work it now and plant it now?

I assumed that I'd need to break down the field and let it sit over the summer to get a good root bed. Also, still need to go find a planter and a set of discs. Not in a hurry to get anything done with it. Paul

Paul: With 40 hp and it sounds as though big acreage will not be the order of the day. I'd go with 2x14 or 2x16. If your nervous it may be tough plowing, ground that hasn't been plowed in awhile or soil surface is a bit rough. The wider 2 bottom plow would be my choice.

I'm in Strathroy, how far away are you. If your new to plowing and want a bit of advice on adjustments, I can help, if not too far away.

There are some of us that prefer a 12" plow over a 14" and deffinatly do not like a 16". I have had all and want to stay with the 12" and for tough stuff the 12" was best
