Brother!

Sometimes, I'm so darn dumb that I think I need to be locked away. :>(

I've always had this heating problem with my 686 after it pulls for an hour or so; couldn't figure the darned thing out. Didn't "seem" to be getting hot, but it just makes me nervous that it "says" it is hot.

Yesterday, when the gauge got up to the "hot" mark, I stick the bulb of a new gauge in the radiator and the new gauge says the temperature is just fine. Okay, I've found the probelm, right? It's the gauge.

Was telling the guys over on the Farmall board about it and one of the guys says, no that the thermostat is not opening far enough. Now, I'm worrying. Don't wanna hurt that engine.

So, I spent an hour pulling sheet metal, etc off the tractor to gain access to the silly thermostat 'cause it is not all that easy on a 310.

I've got her stripped completely down and find this in the picture. Little washer is totally blocking the water flow under the thermostat. Anyway, 2 hours total spent putting in the new thermostat and buttoning 'er back up.

NOW, I'VE GOT IT! No sense putting that new gauge in, right? I'VE FINALLY FOUND THE PROBLEM!

Dumb idea. I head fer the field and I should have replaced the gauge while I had her stripped down as well.

After an hour of pulling, temperature is now reading "just off hot" so both items were bad and now I've got to strip her all back down again to put the gauge in too.

Some days get long by default around my house. :>(

As the thermostat opens, the washer on the bottom blocks off the bypass port as the flow to the radiator increases.

You did put the correct thermostat with the bypass blockoff washer back in, right?

Yes, I did.

That washer "closes" that lower port?

Didn't look at it all that close. Thermostat looked just like the old one and I was in a hurry.

Allan dont know if this will be any comfort to you but I too will sometimes try to do things the cheapest way possible. But sometimes trying to save a few bucks sure has cost me alot of time. When I work on suff for my job or other folks I refuse to go halfway on anything to help insure the best results in a repair but as for my self I have always been a tightwad. So on my Farmakll H I have spared no expense trying to get the best results from my restoration cause I plan on using the old girl for a long time just wish I could have started on it earlier in the winter but was too busy trying to make a few more dollars. What a joke we just spent that on other junk anyway.Well that its for now since you have to take that sheet metal back off I will let you go....You will getter done.....River Bottom Farmer
