How useful are these mini excavator sized 3-point backhoes?

I have been day dreamin' about picking one up at some point.

I wouldn't live without a FEL now that we have one.

Any comments?

I seen another type of light unit that was on its own wheels, you could tow it. In fact it was from a rental place. I watched a feller dig a water line for his well quite a long distance, and some pretty tough going in places. Well i got to say this little machine really impressed me. Now i know its not a case580 or john deere whatever, great low cost machine for the guy that likes to do his own chores his own way.

They are about four or five steps up from a shovel ok for diggen up a broken tile line or a rock out in the field or putting in a water line but the ones i have run are not as far as i am concerned to jurky as they could have made the controls better .

There ok but if you have to small of a tractor they can be hard on a tractor. I had a friend that had one on a Jubilee and he broke the rear end houseing because it was to heavy for his tractor.

Hi Old,

Your friend's problem isn't all that unusual. My little hoe is on a rigid frame that extends to the front of my compact tractor. Hooks at the front and two pins at the rear. Simple attachment.

This time of year I get real popular with it for landscape work. The size and weight of the tractor make it better than a full-sized hoe.

Bought mine 12 yrs ago to trench 1/2 mile down the mountain for utilities. It wasn't the right tool, but it did the job. Saved me $14k. With the rigid undermount, no problem for the tractor. As far as operation, it's just like a full-sized hoe. Mine'll dig down 7'.

New ones cost as much as a Case 580 CK, so I'd question the advisability for most. Other than cost, a great implement.

Check out my web site for a picture of my back hoe. Its mounted on an 8N ford and will dig almost 18 foot but its very very slow.
