Pregnancy check them after the breeding season. Doesn't pay to keep them very long if they aren't carrying. See if they hold their condition.

We've got quite a handful of old cows that had their eleventh calf this spring. How long you can keep them in the herd and producing depends on a lot of things.

There may be almost as many answers to that as people who answer. A good sound cow to start with, good winter feed and care, plenty of summer grass, water and minerals and she should have 6 or 8 more calves. I"m usually one who will keep her one year to many. I had a few cows reach 20 years of age.

Depends on the condition of the old girls. If they're healthy and have no past problems and are due to calve soon or are have just calved, they should be good for 2 or 3 more good calves. The price should be about the same as for culls, 40 to 55 per hundred or with a healthy calf on them $5-600 or a little higher on a private sale with no commisions. That's what they did last week in this area.

Dave,

I would consider that she has paid for herself after she has 2 more GOOD calves. That brings up the question about the quality of calves she has had before, if you can get that info it will be helpful.
Cows are individuals and if you get them I would watch their condition each year, looking for a reason to sell them. 12-15 years old is about the life of a cow when she is producing good calves.

Calves on them look good, one coe is got a big belly and kinda sway backed. Udders looked decent sized to me, but I am used to dairy cows. Younger heifers look good.

4-500 pound beef calves locally brought about $1.10 a pound, steers, heifers both. Bull calves not much different, if that helps.

It also depends on how they are taken care of. Bob

I have several cows that are 13-14 years old. Starting to have problems with them. It seems the winters are much harder on them. Weight loss udder problems, ect. I'm sure there are older cows than that still producing, but I'm looking at culling mine. Just my opinion. I only have around 50 cows . Maybe someone else will comment.

Well, like the old adage goes "it depends". What's her record over her life? If she has always bred back she should be good for at least 3 more. I have an aquaintance that has a couple ole gals that are 15, have never missed rebreeding and are due to calve in another 6 weeks. Some of these grandma cows will suprise you.
