Which way does a distributor spin?

Ok...I'm not sure if I can still call myself a young buck at 35...

But I certainly wasn't raised working with carbs & distributors :)

I had a stupid moment, and when I replaced the cap & rotor on my TO-35, I **thought** I memorized where the wires went. Yes, I **knew** better and **knew** to write them down, even though I didn't...

I know the firing order should be 1,3,4,2 (per several references). I did that clockwise around the cap...I guess I just fundamentally assumed the rotor spins to the right (clockwise).

Runs like crap, for short periods, backfires and dies.

I found this good diagram:

If I'm reading it right, it's telling me the rotor goes counter-clockwise to achieve the 1,3,4,2 order...

So am I correct in switching the wires around to follow the pattern on the diagram?

Near as I know, the rotor spins clockwise. But nobody says they're all the same.

Simplest solution is to pull the cap off, turn the crank, and watch which way it turns. Hard to argue with that.

Yes, "know" better and "do" better ain't the same. But hey, we've all been there. When in doubt I run the starter with the cap off and "see" which way it turns. Then providing you have #1 in the right place it should be correct.

And, when you crank it with the cap off, make sure the straps that hold the cap on, and the cap itself are out of the turning range of the rotor.

Don't ask HOW I know this!
