Can any of you experts out there give me some pointers? My old 8n was just clicking (solenoid) when I went to start her for the season, has always started fine in the past (most recently about 6 weeks ago)
so I decided to pull off the starter, I got it off and gave it juice from my battery charger it just hummed. my question is: shouldnt the starter have spun or began to rotate? Thistractor is still a 6v. system and I dont know if that would make a difference or not. Let me know if you have thoughts. I did take the starter apart and it was not froze up. But did look very aged.
Thanks, apppreciate any response
Mark H in Mo.

probably cables, ground or relay, in that order. The cables should be real 6V cables, not discount auto parts store car cables, there is a big difference in how the right size cable passes current for the starter. The battery charger probably doesn't have the nuts to spin the starter, unless it has a booster but you can test it with a battery

join the club-- most of the time w/ these 6V tract. is the cables. I have taken starters in and then found the batt. end on the cable had lost most of the con. 6 V takes a lot more wire than 12 V do not use 12 volt cables not big enough- also most of the time is the ground cable losing contact

Starters take a LOT of current.

Instead of a battery charger, use a set of jumper cables.

If no 6-Volt battery is at hand, you can use a 12-volt. Testing it that way will not hurt the starter.

Make the booster cable connections at the battery first, and make the last connection at the starter, to avoid the possibility of a battery explosion from a spark.
