I have a 1953 Farmall Super M and since it"s been raining all month, I thought I would take my tractor out in a solid mud pasture to see if I could get it stuck....well, I succeeded! I got stuck in a rain filled trench made by a D6C Cat. What I was wondering, would I have gotten stuck if I had tire chains on the back wheels? I am thinking it would probably go anywhere with chains on. Also, how would it be in the snow? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks--Marvin

If you have a narrow front, the mud will pack in between the wheels and they more or less just slide. Then you are trying to plow with them and the rear wheels will spin. A wide front end will tend to keep rolling, but only to a point. Once the front wheels stop turning, you are done.
That's why front wheel assist is such a huge benefit in mud. But of course the bad news is that when you get one of them stuck, they are really STUCK.

I think the chains only help in ice and snow.

I am curious as to WHY do this to a tractor, as well as serious damage to the pasture?

I don"t see how this is hurting the tractor at all. Also, this is not really a pasture, it"s a flat piece of land that is in the process of being leveled for a homesite. What"s more, the tractor was cheap and I wanted to test it"s limits and fourthly, WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN??

You can get them all stuck, even with chains and duals etc.. but yes, chains would have perhaps helped on regular tractor tread tires, but if all you wanted to do was operate your tractor in soft wet soil conditions like you did today, then a set of rice and cane tires would be just the thing. Only trouble with rice and cane tires is they are not good for much else, they give a terrible ride down the road, they have very deep tread but are made of hard rubber so on hard sufaces, especially ice, they don't proform very good, they are a very expensive tire and you can't run them with low pressure because those hard rubber lugs will break and they will be pretty much ruined. M's and H's are excellent tractors, and it does take alot to get one stuck, they have lots of ground clearance and are about the best tractors to have in snow with chains on, next to a mfwd. I know from experience you must have found an awful sink hole to stick an M witout it towing something or haveing something extra on it such as a loader.
