Farmall M........water in oil

I have a Farmall M that has water in the oil.

I was going to replace the head gasket but someone told me it was probably a hole in one of the sleeves.

I have been searching for sleeves and it seems there are several different ones. How do I know which one i need? Is there a number on the block that i can use?

Thanks for any help.

The M's engine is a dry sleeve type engine. If you are getting water down past a sleeve, Then the thin casting around the sleeve is cracked (not uncommon). You would have to drop the oil pan to see witch one is leaking. Best to pressurize the cooling system to around 10psi. Once you find the leak. pull that sleeve. I've been told, they epoxy those cracks. You might want too go to the Farmall board and ask.

Ya bore the block and install a repair sleeve and bore it to take the OEM sleeve then it is fixed .

Thanks for the info!

I thought it might be getting water from the exhaust manifold but it hasn't rained since i change the oil and when i check the oil the other day it was milky.

As far as how it runs, it seems to run great so maybe its something simple. Thanks again for yalls help.

I'm not a master mechanic but I think if you had a hole in a sleeve you would experence loss of compression, and would run like crap. Try a compression test. Then if everything comes up even pull the head and look at the sleeves, if your head gasket looks good you can use spray-on Copper Seal and it will help seal it again(cheaper than a new gasket). Might check the torque on the head bolts before you pull it off. But be sure of the problem before you buy an expensive sleeve.
good luck

worked on a 400 with severe water in the oil, engine even hydraliced and had to pull spark plug to turn engine over, she ran like a champ once she fired

had bad join between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust stack, tractor was parked outside and rain was getting in that way
