I am trying to buy what I'm sure is a 1954 NAA Ford. The problem is the tractor has a three speed transmission is'nt it supposed to be a four speed? The fella tells me he has had the tractor for 20 years and it was in there when he got it he thinks I'm mistaken when I say it should have a four speed.

The NAA four speed has shift positions 1 - 4 imprinted on the top cover of the transmission. Raised numbers and an R for reverse. Might be hard to see but they are there.

Thanks Guys for the info. I'm going back this morning and have another look to make sure I saw what I thought I saw. The tractor is inside an old barn it's kinda hard to see in there. I'm going to take my glasses this time and a paper and pencil and get some numbers off the tractor. Is it possible somebody put a three speed out of an 9n or a 2n in this NAA, I mean would it fit?

No.. it wouldn't fit unless you were a machinist .. that is.. the massive amount of re-fitting it would require to adapt a 3spd 9n tranny to that tractor may cost more thant he tractor... remember... the 3spt tranny also has the pedistal to the steering column, and dash supports..

N have the rounded hoods and flat head engines.. NAA have the torpedo metal and an OHV engines.

Naa sn will be on the angled boss aft of the starter.. or if it is an early 53, on the left front corner of the engine, near the manifold.

9-2-8 N will ahv ethe number on a 1x4 flat boss just below the head, left side of engine, aft of the oil filter canister..

Take a rag or toothbrush... that flat top tranny will have 1-4 and R imprinted into it. ( 9N tranny is dome topped.. not flat like an 8n / naa.. )

Well I went back to check out the NAA this time I took a flashlight, glasses and a wire brush. After cleaning off the grease, dirt and bird doo boy do I feel like a dummy, it does have a flat top four speed tranny after all. Thanks for all your help. I think we are going to get it out of the barn and into the daylight this weekend so I can get a better look at it before I get to serious about trying to buy it!
