Hi All,

Started workin' down this darned sod mess today.

I had made about four rounds when my friend came over and says, "Here, use this" and promptly drove away.

Think he feels sorry for me and my old tractors. Either that or he is of the opinion that I'm makin' a derned fool of myself out here scratchin' in the dirt with my old red toys.

Felt Guilty, that's fer sure, but does anybody know where I can find a nice clean 7800 anywhere? :>)

Allan

Allan,

I know just how you feel. I went over to a buddies place to load some rock, he wasn"t going to be there so he told me to use the 4440. I was only in the thing a 1/2 hour and I already wanted to trade in the old 706! And that one was 15 years older than that nice 7800 there - I can only imagine how nice they are!

Look at it this way, maybe if you trade in all of your red tractors, and that new truck, you might come close to a down payment on a new one!

Maybe the neighbor borrowed the wife while you were out disking - and he didn't want one of them old tractors breaking down and have you sneak in....

And just how does cheating on your wife feel????? ? After all, if you are just considering these rounds in the field as a demonstration, then the same logistics will apply in taking a few rounds with a lady of the evening. Only be sure to pay cash, no c card paper trails. And who knows, if the evening lady does not complain and you enjoy the ride and her suspension, then maybe a newer model is what you need!!

Mike,

I argued with the guy and told him I felt funny about using his equipment.

He told me, "You cannot hurt that tractor. Go ahead and try to damage it, ya can't." :>)

Asked him why he was doing this, and he just said, "I wanna borrow your baler during haying season".

Okay, we sure have a deal. :>)

Sounds like a good give and take deal to me.

As far as not being able to damage it ? We all know nothing has been made yet that doesn't break. I think he was just trying to get some jabs in on those IH's ? But you sure have to love the way a nice new modern peice of equipment does operate. Very expensive though.

Ain't the world full of good people! Thats why I love rural AMerica. Give me the "Fly Over" country any day! It does me good to see you turning dirt. We have a spring rain going on right now with a perfume to it that is sweeter than any store bought. I just got in from my porch gider and first cup of java. Trying to figgure out a way to wrap my arms around the morning and bring the day inside with me... or just lose myself outside.

I don't know if you know this but that thing in the second picture that is swung open is a door, we close it and you can keep the heat and air conditioning in and hear the stereo, that is the thing music comes out of.

If that is that sod field you are going to summer fallow than that looks pretty good already.

Yes Sir,

I gotta humbly admit that your method is the only way out of this mess.

I just want to get this field mellowed down so I can forget it until fall. Gettin' awfuly close to farmin' time around here and I can't wait to see how that old IH plow works in a "normal" soil.

Thanks for all your help; and believe me, I was takin' notes all the while. :>)

Heck Allan you could pick up a nice 8430 or 86 for 12,000 .00 or less and have a heck of a sod buster and you would love the ride .

He told me that he bought it used four years ago and at that time it cost him $47K.

I cannot even imagine that much money, let alone buyin' a tractor with it.

But, that old sow is a bull now, I'm here to tell ya. Just played with that tough old sod at 5.5 mph.

Last summer I went a round with a 7800 and a Vermeer 605 XL behind it. I had to get out after one round because I could see the dollar signs. I liked that setup wayyyyy y too much. It was cool in that cab, and not dusty, and quiet, and I could here the stereo, and.....the rig cost $100,000 more than my 856 and NH850 baler.... But boy did it ride nice!

I know exactly how you feel Allan.

I was totally against this whole day. Just didn't wanna do it, 'cause I like my old tractors and I like being out in the open.

Told the wife, "How am I gonna tell him that I don’t wanna use his rig without hurting his feelings?".

Anyway, I had hooked up the 686 to my disc and had made four or five rounds before he pulled in. Gotta be honest with ya, he sure could have came a little earlier and it wouldn't have hurt my feelings.

That old sod was throwin' me and that little red tractor around like a cork in the ocean.

When I was a young kid Dad would send me to the field with a 12 ft double gang disk behind the 560D onto plowed ground, bounce, bounce hurt the kidneys and back. A couple of years later I did the same thing with the dualed up 1066 and a bigger disk, then I knew why Dad took the big tractor and left the bronco to the kid who could handle the ride better.
