Do they make different sized ballast resistors?

Like the other gents told ya, fer sure they make different shapes n sizes and ohms and power ratings of Ballast Resistors as some applications required a variety of sizes, but that being said, the typical ignition ballast resistors for use on old 12 volt tractors that used 6 volt coils would be in the 1.5 to 1.85 ohms range rated around 30 watts and be the style of a wire wound resistor in a white ceramic "bathtub" enclosure. To serve as a 50/50 voltage divider so they drop half the battery voltage leaving 6 to 7 across the coil, they would have the same ohms as the coils primary winding.

They not only come in different sizes, they also come in fixed resistance or heat-sensitive (thermal reactive). The latter can be used with no cranking bypass necessary. They allow full current to the coil until they heat up, and then cut back the power.

There are some different ballast resistors available for different applications.

What are you trying to do?

I am having trouble with one on our 706 and I think the guy at the case dealership sold me the wrong one. It was a rip off too. Cost me 30$

The 706 has a "starting bypass" around the resistor, right? So it would be as JohnT says... the resistor will be roughly the same resistance as the coil primary, and NOT a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) resistor).

Likely, a new one WILL look a LOT different than the on that came on the tractor when it was new.

What problem are you having, specifically, hard starting, or burning points?
