Well, I've been searching for about 9 months for a loader tractor. Originally I was looking at International 300 and 330 utilities, then 340 utilities, then 656 and 706 with loaders. I looked at 460's and 560's and finally started looking at new tractors. I ended up with an orange tractor instead of a red one though.

I almost bought a brand new Kubota L5030 and then saw this 1996 Kubota L4200 for sale just north of Dallas about 350 miles from me. I'd been looking for long enough that it looked good and was a good price and there just aren't very many of these later model tractors for sale so I jumped on it.

I paid $11,900 for it with 926 hours on the clock. It isn't brand new but everything seems to work well and cosmetically it looks pretty good also. It has the GST transmission (Glide Shift) that allows you to shift up or down through all 8 gears and back and forth between forward and reverse without using the clutch. A few minor things like the plastic cover on the headlights is broken and the seat is a little loose but overall it seems like a good solid tractor. Tires are decent but probably will need replaced in a few years and I'll replace them with ag tires. I also got the trailer with it for $850 that seems to be a decent trailer also.

One lesson learned for sure was that the tie down straps might be rated for enough weight but they don't work very well with a tractor. The front strap broke twice and the back strap broke once on the 300 mile trip home. It pulled really well and I drove slow on the back roads but I still was really lucky this time that nothing bad happened with the straps.

Here is a picture:

Now I have to decide if I want to sell my 1945 Farmall M or keep it as a backup or keep the rotary mower hooked up to it and use the Kubota for road work and loader work only.

Thanks for all the input along the way and now I'll be able to quit pestering everyone wondering if this or that tractor is any good or not.

Nathan

I think you got a good deal on the tractor! I've put several hours on that model, and it's never let me down.

I will say I don't think you faired too well on the trailer, though. But I still think you'll get your money's worth.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I am pretty happy with the tractor so far and VERY happy to to not be looking anymore.

I am going to get some chains for sure and am not sure if I will keep that trailer or sell it and get a longer one. I didn't have any problems getting plenty of tounge weight so I might get the brakes checked and keep it.

I'm sure I'll keep pestering everyone and still haven't decided on the M. I know if I can't get a good price for it I will just keep it.

Thanks, Nathan

Pretty good price for a low-houred 'Bota. That machine should last you a while, they are well built albeit light.

I would sell the little trailer and buy one a bit longer and heavier built so you can get the tractor further up over tandems I bet that thing could start wiping bad about 60-65 mph .

I have bought and sold with it but I no longer use them for my sales. If I remember right they charged me around $50 to transfer $1600 into my checking account. That was my last time to use them for sales.

Nice looking tractor now and house but I too think you are lucky to sneak it home without a big DOT ticket with those straps.

I also think you did good on that tractor !

Make sure you get some weight on that back end, fluid in tires for sure. It may even need more than that in the form of a weight box or wheel weights. The owners manual should tell how much is needed.

Thats a beauty and I'll bet you will be happier with that rig than with that 756 you were looking at, as that will fit in alot more places than a 756 would and with 4wd you won't be as apt to get it stuck. Good buy!.

Your tie down straps probably did not just break. They got cut. Anytime you pass a strap over something with somewhat of an edge, you need to place some sort of a cushion between the strap and the object it is in contact with. If you don't protect those straps, they will get cut everytime. You did good on the Kubota, I think you will be happy.

You did great on the tractor, but please, buy two GOOD rated chains and two rachet binders before you haul that agin. Please??I get down that way once in awhile and I don't want to eat that thing when it comes off the trailer in front of me. Thanks and good luck with the tractor, Harley

Around here you would need 5 tie downs, one at each corner and one in the middle. Had too many problems with improperly secured loads and then serious accidents. From my pick up truck hauling days (Ford 250 4x4 with a 400 mill and a 24 foot tag along) whenever I was stopped bt DOT, they never checked my weight, etc. but made dam- dam- sure that what I had was well secured. Overloaded and underbraked was never questioned. Sometimes they would check my lights and paperwork, but rarely. And this was up into the 90s!!!!....QR..

You are way too nice!. Here it takes four chains, to four corners. Can't run a single chain through the clevis- need four good anchors. Isn't that standard for CDL? Can just picture someone viewing the accident with tow straps, saying some dumb farmer moving a tractor down the road, risking everyone's lives. Wouldn't take me three broken straps to give me a wakeup call, but then I run chains and binders no matter what the load. I was not nearly this nice when I first saw the post earlier today- thought more people would realize how stupid this was. I'll never apologize for this post!
