Still to early here to put stuff out in the unheated greenhouse. Got a good start inside though.
The last couple of years we've been planting mostly heirloom varities. Anyone else having good luck with them?

Haw do you get them to not grow to tall and spindley that they fall over? Set cabbage and marigolds 2 weeks ago and are in unheated room of house with full glass east wall, Need to get tomatoes started in next couple of days, Am using the no. 7 peat pellets and last year they worked good. I want to build a small greenhouse 14' X 20' this spring and going to use old aluminum storm windows that I have for the walls and 1/4" plate glass that I have had for years for south half of roof. No out of pocket for anything now except some shingles for rest of roof with lumber that I have had for several years. Possible if geting below freezing at anytime just setting in a portable kerosine heater that we bought several year ago when our propane supplier decided they were not going to fill us up and they are now in class action lawsuits in at least 3 states and out of business.

We use a soilless mix for starting seeds. Never had any luck with the peat pods. Some veggies dont like the pH. The green house is a good deal. Even though we have acsess to greenhouse's at work we like to do our own thing at home.

Butcher, we also start our goodies inside with gro-lites and windows in Indiana. Last few years though we seem to be having a blight problem with our maters and peppers. Had the soil tested last fall and it tested perfect thru our local Co-op. Lady at the co op was saying something about us using commercially grown starts which has me wondering what they may do that we don"t? It seems they blight late not early. Ideas?

The problem with blight is that it stays in the soil. Crop rotation is the key. Also, dont plant maters and peppers close to tators. Overhead watering is also a big soarce of blight. We went to a soaker, drip watering set up 2 years ago. It can get costly on a large garden but worth it in water savings(our old well aint in the best shape anymore) and diesies problems. For blight spay with Funginal and or Manapp(sp?).
My wife and I are both in the nursery/landscape bus. and use the same soil to start our seeds at home as the folks who supply our bedding plants at work and still have blight so I dont see any benifits of spend $ on commmercialy grown plants.

I am guessing the over head watering is the culprit and I thought I was doing the right thing by watering at dawn. I do have a lot of soaker hose and will go that route this year. Our garden is 40x80 and the only pesticide we use is Marigolds and lots of em too. On top of spraying with funginal is there any pre-treat for the soil? Thank you for your time. Richard

The other thing you could do is mulch under the plants. We use a red poly under the matoes and peppers. More cost, less weeds. Dry leaves and weed free grass clippings are cheap and improve the soil. Our garden plot is 60*60 with acople of smaller areas. The kids are grown and gone so it is more than we need to can and live on.

We have 12 or so inches of snow outside the window, another 4 weeks be4 seeds can be started indoors 'round here. :) Looks nice tho, we were teased with some 40's & a 50 a couple weeks ago, got us all in the mood - only to be chilled again, lows of 5 or so the last couple nights.
