I just had a new Tractor Supply Company store open last week, about 20 minutes away from me here in eastern CT. I never heard of them before. Does anyone know anything about their actual tractor related products, if any ? Quality ? is is imported stuff ?

We don't have enough working farms around here to support a traditional farm store but do have alot of hobby farmers and horse people. Regardless of their business model, it's sure nice to see the name Tractor on a store sign rather than WalMart or Home Depot.

I'm about one big box store away from moving out now. Kestrel in CT.

As others mention, they are nice to have around, but they are slanted to the 10 acre hobby/horse farmer these days - have to to stay alive & sell to a market that is there. If you have one in a rural farming area, then they will carry more general farm stuff. All depends upon your location. Better to have the option of one around, than nothing at all. Check their web site, they have a lot to offer, but the local store might not have much real farm stuff if there is no real farming in the area.

Got a couple within 45 miles and a new Orschlen's right here in town. Both are Yuppie store's with a LOT of yuppie horse stuff. They also have parts for mowers (hay), driveshafts, and a few tractor things. Wish we still had the Wheeler's or Country General store that died a few years back! I buy some stuff at TSC and Orschlen's, and glad we have one here, go ahead, check it out!

when they took over the Farm and Fleet store here they stocked with made in america parts, hyd hoses, chain, binders, etc. when they reordered it all was from China with the same name on the package. I bought hyd hoses there made in USA then went back later same package same name only visual difference was the outside jacket on hose.

TSC from the start until the mid 80's was 90% farm related, plainjane stores but they had almost any thing you wanted in stock(you might have to ask but it was in there somwhere)and it was almost all namebrand stuff, not privete brands. They started branching out in the 90's and than when they bought out the bankrupt Mich.based Quality Farm & Fleet who had just bought Central Tractor. They allowed most of the Farm-Fleet Mangament to come into the TSC ranks and then made TSC a Yuppie store,(Clothing stores) same as the old Farm-Fleets were therebye RUINING TWO GOOD LINES(TSC AND CENTRAL TRACTOR) no doubt forever.SAD

Great place for Carharts, beet pulp, some nuts and bolts, but SLIM on the tractor stuff. Even their catalog doesn't list much tractor stuff.
Basically a yuppie market.

Tractor Supply Company is not owned by Wal-Mart and it is a publically traded company on the NASDAQ mkt under symbol TSCO. They are nice to have in the community for an alternative source for certain items. They are very similiar to Farm and Fleet but seem to do a better job on smaller, older tractor parts. Still can't beat NAPA but I will try to avoid them when they begin sponsoring Michael Waltrip in a TOYOTA in NASCAR next season.

We had a Central Tractor store for years and it was pretty good. A few years ago,it closed and is now a Tractor Supply Co. store. In comparison to the former Central Tractor - it s*cks. I'm not sure if it's the difference in the two companies or a sign of the times. This was an agrigculutral area 20 years ago - now it's a refuge for city people, horse people, or artists. I'm a bullsh*t artist, but that's a little different - I don't fit in. One case in point. A few days ago I needed a few sediment bowl assemlies for several tractors. Sometimes I get sick of ordering on-line, so I drove 25 miles to the TSC store. They are getting $28 - $35 each for them and it was all "made in India" stuff. So, I came back home, and ordered the same items right through this website. It was $9 shipping for one, but stayed at $9 for mulitiple items, so I ordered four of them at $18 each - and NO d*mn state sales tax. When I got them, first thing I noticed is they are exactly the same items that TSC wanted twice as much for - same box, same number, and "made in India."

You must be talking about the former Oneonta Central Tractor. That Central Tractor did the greatest volume of business, more then any other Central Tractor. Everybody I knew loved that store.

Yes, that is the one - Rt. 23, Southside, Oneonta. I worked across the road from them for many years at the Laneway John Deere dealership until they closed down. I miss those days and wish I could roll back a few years. Maybe that's why I play with all these old tractors.

They're ok for me. I'm a hobby person with only a few needs. I buy all my bolts there and buy them by the pound and it saves me a lot of money.I deal in Farmall and small Ford tractors and they have a lot of parts for both.. They also have a lot of unique products.

I avoid them like the plague. We have 2 within 30 miles and getting another right here in town. This area is going to the hobby farm market as fast as it can so they should fit right in. The reason I stay away is that what I really 'need' is a feed mill, fertilizer blender, and other real farm supplies plus our local farm store and co-op buys back from local farmers hay and grain. With TSC, if its not in stock, good luck. What they do is take the really high profit items (horse feed, cat and dog stuff, etc) business away from the local traditional farm stores. Same reason I dont buy oil and filters at Walmart, they may be cheaper but Walmart wont order me a starter when I need it, NAPA will.

Good morning Kestrol. I'll buy from them sometimes if I'm out by my brothers. Oil or transmission fluid in 5 gallons has been pretty good, as is fence paint. Fence gates, Cat 3 drawdar, 3 point auger. I've found that I can get wooden fence posts and cattle or horse fencing cheaper at the lumber mill.

What I have noticed though is that a lot, and awful lot of their goods are made in China. Forget about chain and hooks for instance, not safe in my book. Reminds me of Menards from that aspect. My sister and brother came over one day w/a new 1/2" drive ratchet from there one Sunday. Said can never have too many of them, and they're right I suppose. I asked what they paid for it, and don't recall how much, but whatever it was told me made in China, worth crap. But I tried it on some loader bolts, and it kept popping out of gear. I didn't say anything, just set it off to the side and used another. It got buried after they left, and is a concrete pad over it now. Its not that I'm ungrateful, its that I don't want my knuckles getting split wide open and have to throw that thing and break anything else. It's in a very safe place now, for all of mankinds sake and anything else that it would've bounced off of.

I guess that its like everything else and depends upon what you want, need, and will settle for on a lot of their stuff.

Mark

The store around here just moved and adapted itself nicely to the dog and cat food/forse market. Getting harder and harder to find any type of poultry or other feeds in stock. Plus the management is not sharp on the market. They stock a lot of things at the wrong time of year.
Still have a lot of tractor and implement stuff in the back corner. Nice to have them around when I need a pitman arm in a pinch.

A lot better than nothing. wish we had one here. Back in the 40s or 50s I could buy over haulkits and "overpower" kits from them. some thing like 80 dollars for a WC Allis complete over haul kit.

Here in Northern NY, there"s still enough dairy farms around to support "real" farm stores, and so our local TSC carries a fair amount of stuff catering to the needs of full-time, full-size farms. However, they also have a lot of "hobby farm" stuff, as well as things for the horsey set and lawn & garden supplies. I believe that TSC is the successor to the old Central Tractor franchise, as most of their stores locally are just old CT stores with the sign outside changed. Much of their tool inventory is the same China-made stuff availible at Harbor Freight, Northen Tool, etc. etc. but "house branded" (often with a "Clarke" brand name) for TSC. I"ve had decent luck buying parts for my Farmalls there, though we also still have a good Case-IH dealership locally that stocks more and knows more about them, so I buy there if possible.

TSC has been around for years. They have a web site that you can search. As you have observed they have really gone the way of the urban farmer and are really tuned in to the mass merchandising/ off the shelf only type products.

I would certainly encourage you to give them a try, but just understand that they are not a parts company for ever ag machine ever produced.

Tractor supply used to be just that, a store where you could get the parts you needed to keep your tractor running. The store, as it is now, is nothing more than a place for the horse and hobby farmer to find horse feed, tack, western wear, and equipment that will fit the small yuppie tractors. You may find a few parts for the older classic farm tractors, but these parts are all made in either China, Taiwan, or Turkey.
It's not a bad store, just be aware of what you are getting.

I have had good and bad experience with them. They are O.K. price wise if it is a routinely stocked item, such as front tractor tire, shredder blade, lube products welding supplies etc. Last week I needed a shredder gear box item and they did not want my business-sent me directly to Case/IH dealer without even looking at a parts book.
