20 years ago, i lived in a small town. now i dont, but yet i didnt move. Dang suburbs surrounded me. people from Chicago move here, then have to have 3 24 hour supermarkets, super wal mart, and all the other crap. try to park at the hardware store with all the $50,000 duallys taking up 2 spots because the owner doent know how to drive, or why he even needs one. my property taxes go up because new schools need to be built for their brats, who bring drugs out here. anyway, i want to move to an area that wont be taken over by city people. im just a truck driver and mechanic, and do my best to fit in with my neighbors and help out whenever needed. am i being a hypocrite by hating the newcomers, then moving to a small town myself? based on what ive said about myself would any of you accept me to your small town? thinking about heading for wisconsin. thanks for any input, and feel free to speak your mind, thats what i want.

I wish you well in your search for the good life in rural America. You are welcome here in Kansas but I must warn you that the taxes are so high that you must either live in a tent or bring a boat load of money with you. The penalty for owning a modern convienence (a.k.a. taxes) in this state is outragous! I've lived in several states and Kansas is the most stupid (not the people but the government) and the taxes are the highest. Something to consider when moving to a different state.

Never work that far down, but you're right about cheaper land and everything. I'm figuring that if he's 35 west of Chicago, we're looking at Plainfield, Oswego, Aurora, and Yorkville area. I often work that area, have for years. One wouldn't recognize any of it from 5 years ago. Can't see beyond the houses.

Once start getting down into Livingston, Ford, Kankakee, and Iroquise counties alone, is nothing but wide open farm fields as far as the eyes can see. The prices of land drop down to 1/4 of that in Will, Grundy, and Kendall counties and are in a totally different world from Dupage county. If he's a trucker that wants to stay in Illinois, you're right - head anywhere south for a lifetime to come.

I gave up, the state of Minnesota is trying to take over a bunch of farms here to give away to developers for more houses,a friend is leaving to go to Alaska this summer never to return, the people have to take control of the government back, stop them from taxing people out of their houses, you get someone to build a 5 million dollar house next to your place and in a few years the government raises you taxes so much you have to move out 10 years ago I really saw this start up, maybe it"s too late to do anything, but would be nice to slow it down at least..

You bet! you are welcome to come to my small town. You can build or buy in the new addition on the East side by the new school or the new high priced places on the west side or buy one of the 5 acre lots out on the south side. On second thought, you can buy my place. Don't have a Wally world yet, but the town needs it for taxes.

If you are a tractor diesel mechanic (like farm tractors), I think the old dealer back home in SW North Dakota is looking for help. Town of 300 people, 25 miles away from a town of 25,000 or so with the Super Wally World and 24 hr groceries. Can get into a pretty nice house for around $50k, buy a few acres with a house for a touch more than that. Email for info if this is what you're looking for...

Check out Oklahoma.. Local New Holland dealer is advertizing on the radio for two mechanics. Can be completly in the country 15 minutes out of Tulsa. Bought 7 1/2 acres with a 30 X 40 shop 20 minutes from down town Tulsa for $55,000.

If you can stand the $ for driving to work, several places here in Northern MN. Debs, about 35 miles NW of Bemidji. Alida, 35 Miles SW of Bemidji. They show on a map but not population. Mostly small farms and loggers. A good mechanic (especially Diesel) should not have a problem getting work, but not Chicage wages. Great country to live in and fresh air to breath. But I kid you not, shool tax and drugs are every where- Come on up and look it over.

You are obviously feeling sorry for yourself so go find an Indian, sit down and have a long conversation about being crowded out of your preferred lifestyle.

not feeling sorry for myself at all. i cant change whats going on around here, they call it "progress" i dont like it, so i'd like to change where i live. what i DONT want to do is just be part of someone else's problem. i'd only want to live in a house where someone else moved out of. i hate the huge subdivisions on what used to be beautiful farmland, and wont live there. and what happened to the Indians is terrible, but i dont know what to do about it now.

Know how you feel. We used to farm seven farms. One is now a golf course; one a housing development; one a Wal-Mart, Super K, Lowe's & Home depot complex. From our home farm we see the lights of town as it spreads our way. In 1965, four traffic lights would get you through town- now it takes 15. Almost dread taking a haybine between the two farms left-cars heading to the malls want me off the road; have found myself waving back with a distorted hand. Empty house on 7 acres joins our back 40 here in s.w.Pa. owned by a holding company in Calif.! House is not in view of any other house. Very long lane, however.

I totally agree with you and sounds like we would get along fine. But then wouldn't moving into a smaller area be doing the same thing as your present neighbors tried to do a few years back ????? ????? ?????

I see that here alot now. Some realator buys a farm ,splits it up into 2-5 acre building tracts everyone thinks great ! nice open area we will be alone when they first buy their lot in an open field, next thing you know all the houses spring up then they think this area is too crowded lets sell our house and move. See this all the time as most of those new houses are back up for sale in a year sometimes several times over again.

Hey Brother,
You can move in next to me anytime you want to. Only problem is, I am now (in a way) homeless. My family has an old run down farm in Central Texas, but to live on it I have to buy it. I grew up in a city in South Texas, moved with my parents to Central Texas farm and lived there for five years, then joined the USAF. Now after 20 years I am in Korea and ready to settle down. Thinking about looking at the Texas Panhandle or maybe Eastern New Mexico. The boss lives in Clovis (has already proven more than once that she won't leave) so I will have to be someplace close to there.

Depending on what you are looking for, there is a lot of opportunity if you are willing to adjust. I know our climate and lifestyle is a lot different from what you are used to there in Wisconsin.

Jim

35 miles west of Chicago is Chicago or probably Dupage Cty. That area has been growing since 1960 so Developement should not be a surprise.Move on out to Dixon or Geneseo area or down to Kewanee. There are still areas of ILL. that have a small town lifestyle. My daughter lives at Mt.Zion ILL just by Decatur and that is most certainly a Small town Lifestyle. Please do not move to where Nebraska Cowman is suggesting, maybe not but that appears to be my neighborhood.Just fun'in you a little.John

Well you don't sound anymore like "Oliver Douglas" than I do. Sounds like we must be close to the same age. I guess I got thinking about my workmate when I thought you were in/from Wisconsin. Hey there is plenty of opportunity for a truck driver and a mechanic if your really interested in moving that far from home.

Take care mate and drop me an email sometime if you want to. My email address is jimmykey@yahoo.com

later days mate,
Jim
