I've just purchased a 5 acre property that is almost all in closely cropped grass, so i need a really good finish mower. I also have alot of projects that i would like to do that would require a post-hole digging attchment, so i guess i need something with a pto. I know that kubota has some compact tractors, that are also belly-mowers, but i wonder if that versatility would come at the expense of effecient mowing. it seem that for pure mowing it would be hard to beat one of those big zero-turn mowers, but i don't see any of those with a pto? Any one been down this road before? thanks for the feedback.

I have a 10FT wide gang mower that can be pulled by almost any garden tractor. Think about it 10FT wide at 4 MPH. If you look around you can find them for less than $1000 or can get a new PRO-MO homeowners model for about the same price.

I have a tractor with a finish mower. Last year I bit the bullet and got a zero turn mower. It is a much faster than a finish mower, and I don't have to mount and dismount the finish mower. I know it is a lot of money to have tied up, but It saves a lot of time, probably cuts mowing time by 3/4. I agree with the other posts about not needing a post hole digger.

I mow about 5 acres also. Used to do it with my M4700 Kubota and a land pride 84" 3-point finish mower. Last year we traded the finish mower(kept the tractor) in on a new Kubota ZD21 zero turn with a 60" deck. It is a diesel and doesn't use near as much fuel as my bigger tractor did to do the same job, also I cut my mowing time in half. And the best part of all is now my wife always wants to do the grass cutting cause she thinks it's fun and she wants to work on her tan so I have time to do other chores!

Well, if it were me, I don't belive that I would buy a zero turn. I own two for my mowing business, and love them. The only down side is they are really only good for cutting grass, and even with a larger deck and engine, 5 acres will take a good bit of time to cut. I think that I would get a early to mid 90's Deere or other manufacturer's equivelent, about 35 to 40 horsepower with a belly mower. Having the finish mower sticking out behind you, it's hard to get into a lot more spots than you think. I know this from expirence. Also, I wouldn't buy a post hole digger for 5 acres worth of fence, unless you're gonna put in other fence for horses. Something else to sit around in the way and collect dust once you're done, but if you're set on one, just rent one for a weekend. Lot easier and cheaper. Whatever you choose, good luck and have fun.

Buy yourself a nice garden tractor or zero turn. For fence building, get yourself a manual post hole digger from a hardware store, or you actually don't need a post hole digger at all, just a round bar to poke and ream a hole in the ground to stick the end of the fence post into, then drive it in with a post maul. There, you could save yourself some money. I am guessing you want to build a property fence around your 5 acres. 5 acres really isn't much and once your done, you wouldn't have any more use for a post hole digger.

Just my .02, but I've discovered that any machine I own that serves only 1 purpose is just not worth owning, esp. true if you have small acreage like me. For the price of a really good zero turn, you could have a nice small tractor that will do anything you ask of it. Buy a diesel, you'll be very happy with it.

I agree, I looked at zero turns in the past. I think they`re the slickest thing around for mowing, but other than that they`re pretty useless. Going with a small utility with a 3pt
your possibilities are so much greater. Most of the newer compacts are foot control hydro, so mowing back and forth or around trees is still pretty fast, easy to adjust speed in the open lawn as well. If your gonna do mostly mowing with it, I`d go with the belly mower over the three point. If your looking at doing alot of different jobs and depending how easily the deck comes off your tractor, maybe the 3 pt finish mower is a better option. Once you have the tractor, you can always rent the 3pt attachments (post hole digger) if they`re gonna be seldom used. I also agree, I`d buy a diesel. Hope this helps Brokenwrench

You can do an excellant job of mowing with a belly mower or even a rear mounted finish mower on those compacts.
