I'm looking at buying a fiat 115-90 that has been stored for 5 years and in that time never started. It has very low hours and seems in good condition. I've givin it a run and checked the engine oil, everything was good as far as running of the engine and it's oil was concerned. The thing that worries me is i've heard that when tractors are stored their transmisions can rust internaly. Does 5 years sound like a lot for this to happen? Also anything else that i should watch for?

I actualy live in North Queensland Australia. Our climate is tropical, We're right next to the Daintree Rainforest. The tractor itself was stored in an enclosed shed not farm from our farm.
I was thinkin of tacking it for a short run and then draining the old trans oil to see if there was any rust, Is that gonna tell me anything? Or will i get more information from the water. The other thing with water, if i find any, is how much is to much?

Mark; Just like anything else, the climate and conditions of operation are going to have a big effect. You said inside, but if temp and humidity had wide flux's then its possible that a lot of humity built up inside there. Was it in the desert in Arizona or in a wetter climate? I would drain the bottom of all the cases looking for water before running, sounds like you have started it so you may have to look for milky appearance to them. A good idea is to crack the drains and see if water comes out before starting stored equip. For sure change it all out before running for long. Dont forget to change the anti-freeze, it loses it ability to prevent rust.
