I started a message a few weeks back about a Farmall 826 Gas Hydro and how only 68 of these rascals were ever made. Well this tractor was on an auction on wednesday and it brought $17,000. I just thought it was rather interesting.

These tractors used a lot of fuel when plowing or any field work, but now they are really handy with loaders or haying or any thing around the farm yard. If you go price a new one of this HP it'll be a lot more money but with so few made I'm sure they are collecting them. I don't know that they were so bad to run, it was the fuel and cost when new. Also everyone looked at cost to repair at that time and the fact that not many mechanics knew any thing about them.

the most interesting thing in my eyes is how undesireable this tractor would be to actually farm with too. I few days ago, someone told me that the rarest tractors are the ones that people never wanted. Certainally the case here...or just my opinion.

My dad bought a 1026 Diesel Hydro from Bahls Imp in 1970 or 71. We used that tractor for everything from plowing to planting to chopping and eventually put a loader on it. If I could have only one tractor with which to farm, give me that 1026 Hydro. I did custom round baling in Goodhue county for about 10 yrs and that hydro served me well. If anyone knows of one for sale I would like to know about it. Joe

Well, oddly enough, your in my backyard. I worked for a farmer east of Goodhue and he has a 1026 just sitting there, pry for sale. He sold his cows, now his farm set up and most of his tractors are sitting and wasting away. Seems to me the hydro has issues though. Still interested? Email me if so, its uncovered

Some rare tractors are rare because they have very limited utility. Tractors like HIGH CROPS for example. If you are growing tomatos or gladolias you might want one. Since there aren't all that many farmers growing the very specialized ctops, not too many were built.

The trouble with a gas hydro 826 is that by the time the gas 826 came along diesel was very predominate and the hydro transmission was also a limiting factor. At that time, a tractor of an 826's size was considered a "big field tractor" which you used for heavy tillage---something a hydro could do, but not very well.
