I one of your posts you mentioned that you have done quite a bit of automatic transmission repair. I bought a 86 GMC 3500 with a 350 and the 400 trans with 16,000 original miles. I plan to pull a trailer with it local grossing no more than 6 ton. I changed the trans oil and filter. The fluid looked good and there was very little metal on the magnet. It does not have an add on cooler, just the stock radiator cooler. What kind of service can I expect to get out of this transmission and can you offer any other advise. Thanks

Thanks for the advise. I have already changed the filter and refiled with Dextron. I'll look into the type F the next time, but I will add another cooler now. I have a Mack rollback and will only use this 1 ton for the small stuff and when the wife wants to ride along, probably won't put 1000 mi a year on it. I feel kinda foolish picking up a Cub with a 10 wheel Mack.

The tranny cooler will help from overheating a 400 for sure. I have one on my 80 3/4 ton and we do some serious pulling from time to time with it. A B&M shift kit will help, but it is not necessary if you are going to pull with the truck ocassionally. Simply starting in first gear and using your colum shifter like a manual tranny will work just fine on extreamly heavy loads. You may want to consider using Royal Purple tranny fluid. I have been using it for several years and that stuff is magic in a bottle. It was designed for extreamly hard core conditions, and it works great in GM 400 tranny's.

The 400 is a pretty tough ol' tranny.

I'd for sure put on the GM external cooler if you're gonna tow anything at all and I'd plumb it in series with and downstream of the radiator cooler.

I dunno, the 400 uses a "stacked" shift instead of a "timed shift", so I really don't think the shift kit is even necessary.

I have done a lot of work on those older transmissions. I would definitely add an external cooler. I would also consider a shift kit made for heavy duty towing. They are available from several manufacturers, B&M most notable. Another thing to consider is using type F fluid. It is a little stickier and may firm up the shifts eliminating slippage under load. These add ons, keeping the fluid level and condition in good shape, you would have to try to damage the transmission.
