I am looking at buying a 6700 Turbo with 12500 hours on clock. New everything inclufding PTO clutchs. Problem is it seems chattery, and you can feel vibrations on the differential housing. Is this a concerne?

That's a tough one to call at a distance. Those PTO's do make a certain amount of rackety clackety noise, especially at idle. However, I don't think that you should feel too much, if any vibration. As I recall, you've got to drop the gears through the bottom opening to change that bearing that kyhayman is talking about. Everybody needs their own personal 4 armed cyclops to do that job. Those gears are a tad heavy. For what it's worth, a 6700 with 12500 hours would need to be fairly cheap. With an add on turbo, it would need to be cheaper. I'd be willing to bet the old girl got quite a pummeling over the years. Good luck.

Thanks for comments everyone, hard to get good advice here in Australia. The machine is indeed a turbo, was an anniversary run apparently released in 1980. However the motor has been replaced with a 7710 motor i beleive 268 with a turbo. Mechanic did not connect PTO brake cable correctly when i heard it rattleing, since then he has fixed this and is seems much quieter and does not vibrate the housing. Anyway I will ponder some more, the price they are asking is $18500 Aus. For comparison I am looking at a 5000 with under axle blade and 4500 hours on clock for $14500, no cab of course. Which would you buy???

I think the price sounds pretty steep on both, although I don't know your market on tractors, or the relative exchange rate. In Canadian funds, those would be very high prices for pumped out open station tractors. At 12500 hours, what else was done to that tractor? An engine, PTO? What about the brakes, hydraulic pumps and lift, the transmission (clutch... synchros, bearings)? Has the dual power been done (if it has dual power)? You've got to consider that the design life of those tractors was 10000 hours.... and this one has an engine with 15 more HP than the original if it hasn't been turned up, and lots of 7710's were turned up.... I think if I was reasonably satisfied that the 6700 would not turn into a money pit, I would dicker on the price more. I don't think I'd be afraid to walk at that price though, unless there's been a major amount of rebuilding done, and is in known good operating order. HTH.

Thanks for comments Rod. I am green on this topic so bear with me. The mechanic claimed the only thing that has not been done is the crown wheel/pinions in the back end and the brakes. Brakes work well and have plenty of adjustment left? There are no leaks around axles and little preload so he thought it was all ok. Dual Power has been done. Hydraulic pump, mainshaft through box, clutch, new compliant a/c system (not condensor in cab roof though), new motor, PTO. Not sure on the other details. I am concerned on this motor power thing. I understood the 6700 and 7700 had same running gear with 67 on a 77HP engine and the 77 on a 95HP engine. My spec sheet here for the 268 inch 4 cyclinder turbo is 103HP. What does turned up mean, greater HP i gather. The dealer said PTO needed doing as it was slipping?? Anyway I though that 15000 was probably OK money. I do feel alot of work has been done on it and it should not cost too much more, maybe that is just dealer talk coming out. Theonly work would be slashing and some cultivation. My email is furnessm@tpg.com.au if you like I can send some photos if you write to me and i'll reply. The second hand tractor market here seems hot at moment, dealers even selling machines without going through workshop. I am also looking at a David Brown 1210 for $8500. Very neat body but no hand brake, bad oil leak in external hydraulics and buggered water pump, but my brother thinks DB's are great so I am all confused.

Cheers
Mitch

Theres a caged needle bearing on the inside end of the PTO shaft, devil itself to change. Not a normal service item on a PTO rebuild done from the top.

A turbo is not stock on a 6700.
