I got an e-mail from my uncle just the other day, and he recieved 4 of the 6 blades for his batwing in the mail just last week. He told me that they were the same blades that he had been paying $50+ for years for these mowers. He was going to take one of them to the local Woods/JD dealer and let them know how he feels about the mark up on the woods blades. In case anyone is looking for new blades for their woods batwing, check out Sloan Express, seems like they have fast shipping and good quaulity, and they do carry more than blades, but that is all I have heard anything about so far, they are pretty new to me. Just thought I would let you all in on the "secret".

Well, I had some aftermarket blades for a 70 cub cadet with a 38" deck. They were crap. I was sharpening them all the time. Then I got another tractor and deck, and it had some factory blades from IH that had hard surfacing on them. No doubt, they lasted 10 times longer. Little things like that will save you in the long run.

Well, I have bought some after market blades for my Woods mower. Blades did not last but one grinding. OEM lasted thru 6 grindings.

So, for the few bucks I saved on the price of one set of after maket blades, I would have had to buy three sets to get my six grinds !

You do the math !

That is not really a secret, that has been going on for years. When you buy OEM parts, you are paying for the name, all the advertising the company does to let you know about their product, you are paying for the warranty the manufacturer offers to you. If you are dealing with the same Sloans express I am thinking of, they are a big JD dealer in central Illinois. some of their prices are good, some are kinda pricey, so you have to be careful. Some OEM parts are actually cheaper than aftermarket, so don't fall into the "it's aftermarket so it has to be cheaper" trap, jsut watch what you are buying. You can also buy cheaper? blades and then find they are actually 30% lighter blades that you saved 20% in price. I see this kind of thing every day.
A good quality aftermarket blade is made by the same manufacturer as the OEM or they might make it for the OEM.

They"ll probably tell him like the Toro dealer told me. "Our blades are made of a higher quality steel and will keep an edge longer." I doubt it.
