I'm looking at a 1970 AC 200 and a 1965 AC 190XT. Looking to use it as my primary tillage/chisel plow tractor. Maybe some haymaking, planting. I never had any experience with any Allis Chalmers tractors of that age.
I'm guessing the horsepower of both is around 100. Any comments on either of these tractors? Any typical problems I need to be aware of? Thanks

The 200 has to be newer than a 1970. They started making it after the 190 series IIIs. A 1965 190 would be an early one. It would probably have the small axles. Like the others have said, make sure they don't jump out of gear, especially 3rd. You will be able to tell right away if you start down a hill. They will pop right out of gear especially with something hooked on the back.

Just do you and your family a favor, test the brakes before trying to make it pop out of gear. Otherwise, you may be in for a fast ride.

Never used one for plowing, but for hay making ya' can't harly beat a 190.. though the 185 is a bit better.. little less power, though not much. if you can find one get a 185.. won't be sorry.

I have worked on a few and the bigges problem is the price of parts that will knock your sockes off. The power director is real pricey to fix about three times more then doing a T/A in a Farmall the HDY pump is outragious and they will jump out of 3rd and 4th and that is a major tear down to fix . But they will run strong i realy do not care for there way of getting there live PTO but it works .

Biggest problem I have seen on them is the tranny jumping out of gear on them. Test drive them in all gears and make them pull and then make them hold you back, I.E. engine brakeing and make sure they stay in all gears. Very common problem on the 190XT.

Don't rely on the tractordata info. It is often inaccurate. The 190XT diesel and the 200 are rated at 93.64 hp pto, and the 190XT gas is 89.53 hp pto. Most of the problems jumping ot of gear are due to people who trying to shift using the power director rather than the engine clutch and damaging the gears.
I have used a 190XT diesel for 14 years and have had few problems.
