Hello, I was wondering what models of old corn planters have the ability to plant pumpkins. I run about 6-8 acres of pumpkins and sell them retail. Planting that much by hand is time consuming. Right now that is my limiting factor, I really need to plant more to meet demand. Any advice on makes, models and anything in general will help.

One row, 3 pt hitch tobacco (vegetable) transplanter. $20 bucks at sales. Cut the chain with pockets and remove. 1 inch pvc pipe down the chute where pockets ran secured by 2 hose clamps. Throw away H2O bbl to get it out of the way. Rider counts to 6 (8, 10 based on speed) and drops 3 seed down pvc. WORKS LIKE A CHARM! Less than 30 bucks vs. 200 and up, way up, with planter that you never really know whether seeds drop. Been raising 3 acres for years. 2 row cultivator set up as 1 row plows out between 6 ft. rows. Simply great way of raising!

matt, A pair of old JD 71 flex-planters should fit that bill quite nicely. Will attach on to 2in. diamond bar. Hope this helps.
Later,

Get in contact with Lincoln Ag Products (lincolnagproducts dot com) and they will tell you all you need to know. They sell blank plastic plates for several machines.

Others may have different answers, here is mine.
Buy an old IH planter that takes ring plates. (many models are out there) get plastic plates that have the biggest and afarthes apart seed slots in them. Use Devcon plastic repair epoxy to close all bit 1, or opposing 2 slots. enlarge the remaining slots to accomodate the seeds, and test the rate with the seeds you will use. 2 per "hill" would be fine. spaced at 30-40" (or your choice)

We used to plant about that many acres of pumpkins, we used an old tomato/cabage planter that you pulled behind a tractor. Two people sat on the planter and alternated placing the seeds in the furrow. The plus with this was the planter had a drum on the back that we mixed water/fertilizer to give the pumkins a shot to get started. We seemed to space them pretty well with practice
