Tractor won't stay in 5th gear - all other gears are fine. Also, howling noise - not sure from where. Could all this be shifter lever related??

The tractor was recently purchased with this 5th gear problem. I had heard that there were issues with the shifter and wanted to start there. If this was ok I figured I would have to take the plate off and look at the gears. If the gear is bad, it sounds like it would be obvious. Do you agree?

Yes, in terms of running, the teeth will likely be ground off more that the other gears. It doesn't pay to speed shift and H :> (Or so Dad kept saying)

Is this a new issue? I do not know about the howling but many of the H's I have driven will not stay in 5th under a load due to the excess wear on the gear. You can remove the transmission cover and check the wear on the 5th gear.
