Mornin" boys, Got a chance to pick up a 62 GMC 4000 dirt cheap. Has the V-6, 2 speed axle, 12 foot box. Pretty good shape overall, just been parked inside for a couple of years. Anyone got any experience with these? Any pros or cons? I"m just going to use it for hauling firewood and hay.
We"re going to try and fire her up tomorrow, I"ll post back and let y"all know what we find.

My day had a 305 independant 4000 and a 351 solid axle 4000. Great trucks - lots of torque - and lots of gas. Real heavy industral strength motors

Greg,
I have a 1965 GMC 4000 with the 305 V6, 4 speed, 2 speed rear axle. Mine has the solid front axle and not independent suspension like Jon is talking about. Mine has been a good truck. Speedo stopped working at 278xxx miles about 5 years ago and is still going strong. Those V6 engines were "industrial strength" with lots of iron in them. You can still get stuff like fuel pumps, starters, etc. for them. Don't know about internal parts. Farm trucks of this vintage usually sell from $900 - $2500 around here depending almost entirely on condition. Good luck.

Those are good old trucks,I still run a 67 model 7000-8000 ? (the ID plates are missing on this ex military truck)twin screw with the big 478 V6. It was an old military fuel tanker that I converted to a seed tender.
A 62 model 4000 will likley have a 305 or 351 V6. Good old engines, but getting very hard to find parts for them. I was able to get a rebuilt distributor for mine through napa last year.
One thing you should check is the front suspension, they use a torsion bar sprung IFS system with ball joints which are incredibly expensive to replace (over $ 400 each X 4). To check them, jack up the front of the truck untill the front wheels are off the ground. Shake the bottom of the wheels in/out to check for ball joint slop. I scrapped a very restorable 6000 cab over because I did not want to invest the almost $1700 needed to put the front suspension in shape. If the joints on your truck are in good shape, keep them well greased.
